Brown :-(

the worn brown finish is thinner and softer than the Gibson Deep Gloss that you pay so much more money for.
It's also way different from the hard plasticky polyurethane that Epiphones and most other guitars are dipped in.

I like it. What I do with mine is wax it... using a product designed for the Antique Furniture dealer to use.
What I use is called "Howard's Feed n Wax" here in the USA. Other nations will likely have a different product
available that does the same thing. Antique furniture must not have its finish disturbed, because the pieces are
worth more with antique varnish on. So a light coating of this waxy stuff is okay. It's a mixture of beeswax
and Orange oil and some other witchy things, and this is what my SG looks like when I've just polished
her with it.

I have a 2011 SG Special Faded in worn brown.
To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan when I first got it.
I didn't choose it - My wife bought it for me as a surprise. I would have preferred worn cherry, but they didn't have any in stock.
The colour has definitely grown on me though. I contemplated spraying it or filling the grain... But I've come to like it. It feels like
a beaten up old guitar that I've had for decades.
I will never get rid of this guitar, or change the finish.

Reaches over and steals Alex's Witch Hats.

LOL Alex,,,,,, the postage from Australia to USA would likely be very high compared to the prices I could get em for over here.

Thanks for the offer. HEHE

All good brother. ;)
I actually sent a set of nickel silver pickup covers to Adam (the young dude from Egypt on ESG "doodoaxd" I think his nickname was) once!
But they are a lot harder to get there, apparently...

Tell ya what, Chili... The witch hats look so much better than the black top hats that come standard on the specials these days...

They could have at least used the top hats with the silver inserts, instead of the all black ones...

I put the stock black ones on my p/j bass. The original knobs on that were falling apart, but the top hats look ok on it.

Thanks Col. I just did a quick google search & found this is readily available in Australia. My 60's tribute has a bit of a shine to it from use so an application of this should gloss it up well. Yours looks great, BTW. Cheers

My avatar says it all for me.
this should gloss it up well.

This will do it shinier! Cleaner to clear finish then a Polish to shine. I actually keep this away from the rest of my cleaning and polish supplies because I don't want to gloss up certain guitars.

Thanks Biddlin. Mine is the satin cherry finish rather than the faded & now has got quite a shine in places like the upper bout & just below the pickups (no guard), which I kinda like. I'd like it like all over while protecting it at the same time. Like Col's would be nice. Cheers

Will buy an SG in the near future. It may sound dumb but I'm considering,
Chibson
Epi G-400 Pro
Gibson ???
Almost eliminated the Chibson as cost landed in Australia then upgrades get it too close to the Epi.
The Epi is looking like the option just now.
Gibson hmmm not many around town to hold / test.
I'll work it out BUT this Gibson is being pushed by my local shop, I dislike the look and therefore haven't even plugged it in. Refereed to as "worn brown", I'd call it "kicked about the floor brown" :-(
Anybody like this "worn brown"?

I bought one of those from Sweetwater and sent it right back. Aside from the guitars actual finish looking crappy like that, the fret board and neck seam was terrible. I will never buy another guitar without seeing it in person first. Actually now that I have my LeSG, I don't think I'll want another guitar for a very long time. :fingersx:

I prefer a natural wood finish personally. I find them effortless to care for. Now, with regard to the above described guitar, and coming from someone who had numerous problems with a brand new 2016 Gibson SG, there are a few things I would look closely at....

Referring to your photo in the original post, I direct your attention to the bridge. The E, A, D & e string saddles are maxed out, meaning they are at the extreme limits of their travel. In almost every case, I have found the intonation to be off on such guitars and beyond bringing them back into adjustment. Compare the position of string saddles on your guitar to the one in post #10.

My 2016 Gibson SG was in a similar condition. It took modification to the nut slots to correct the intonation issue. I also had noisy pickups in mine, which I decided to replace, since I do a lot of recording.

I would evaluate tone, intonation and EVERYTHING under a microscope before buying another Gibson, regardless of vintage.

Best wishes!!!
