Best Bands With Dual Lead Guitarists

Personally, I’ve never liked the designation of “rhythm” or “lead” guitarist. I prefer to watch bands where these roles are shared among the guitarists. On one song, one guitar player may play “lead”. On another song, the other guitarist fulfills that role. I realize a lot comes down to what any particular guitarist wants to do; a guitar player may simply not want to play lead parts. I get that. But, I enjoy variety within the group.

That's pretty much every rock band. In Scorpions, Rudolf and Mattias share leads, same as Glenn and K.K.did in Judas Priest.

Angus has said that Malcolm could play all of his lead parts and even better than him and that Malcom came up with a lot of the solos.

From a 1994 interview - Angus mentioned that Malcolm came up with the riff for Back in Black and Angus said, "I still don't think I play it right compared to Mal."

I’ve read some of those interviews. Angus has said Malcom could do what he did with no problem…… and do it better. Angus has stated he could never do what Malcom could do.

Though Maiden has used the 3 headed monster since 2000, they operated as a duo for 20 years prior and did it beautifully in harmonizing. The constant has always been Dave Murray but at various times with Dennis Stratton, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers. Now its the last 2 with Dave and it works even greater.

But as for standard lead duos?
-Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson- Thin Lizzy
-KK Downing and Glenn Tipton- Judas Priest
-Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman/Chris Poland- Megadeth
-Dickey Betts and Duane Allman- Allman Brothers Band
-Andy Powell and Ted Turner- Wishbone Ash
-Joe Perry and Brad Whitford- Aerosmith
-Steve Clarke and Phil Collen-Def Leppard
-Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton- Queensryche
-Jesper Stromblad and Bjorn Gelotte- In Flames
-Joel Stroetzel and Adam Dutkiewicz- Killswitch Engage

Honorable mentions to Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones with The Outlaws, however they technically had a 3rd guitarist with Henry Paul ( who didnt play leads however). Same exact mention to the legendary Don Felder and Joe Walsh who technically had a 3rd guitarist in Glenn Frey ( again he didnt play solos). As for the classic line up of Lynyrd Skynyrd, they along with Iron Maiden today, are the true 3 headed monster with all lead players: Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Ed King/Steve Gaines.

Happy Days band... (Weezer)

Kidding aside I really think of Scorps. Already listed though.

Ever work with two guitars on an original, recording? The limits have no bounds. It's really easy to make something "classic catchy" in no time.

There's a lot of dual guitarist bands but I guess I was thinking of dual lead players vs a Rhythm and Lead player which is why I skipped some names that I love like AC/DC, KISS, Metallica, The Scorpions, UFO. Though each band had a guitarist that COULD play lead, they really never did except for maybe a few various recordings. Not a full time thing I guess you'd say

What I like most about good dual leads is the unison and harmony riffing, swapping solos, and swapping off licks within solos.
Saw Wishbone Ash about the same timeframe at the Municipal in Atlanta.
Atlanta was a great music city in the early 70s...local, regional, and national acts galore. Live music ruled the town back then
