Maybe I'm imagining this but
Forgive me but I think Pat Benatar is still singing the same songs she was singing, when I was in high school.
That was in 1973.
I just saw an advertisement that she's having a concert here in Paso Robles...
(the sound system at Vina Robles amphitheater sucks)

But isn't it enough already? Haven't we had enough?

I though hearing Bob Seger on the radio (now) all the time was bad enough.
(also singing the same songs that were on the radio when I was in high school)

What the hell is wrong with the American Music industry anyway?
Doesn't anything become stale anymore? I mean, where "is" the limit?

Well, you keep buying it, she keeps singing it.

I don't think she can sing like she used to , at least not with the same power.

The music industry has gotten very stale , possibly since the decline big record deals.

I would attribute that in part due to the internet.
I absolutely hate serious radio.
I had it for a while, I listened to Ozzy's bone yard. One Saturday only a week apart the algorithm repeated the exact same songs. That's when I told them to pound sand.

Almost none of the singers I listened to and loved from early 70s can sing like they used. A few exception. Mick being one. Pete Townshend can still carry a tune. Roger Daltry.... he destroyed his voice. It's a long list. :cry:

SiriusXM Radio. No argument from me. Playlists do seem to get recycled. I can live with that. I just change the channel. But I pretty much refuse to listen to local radio. You get one song. Go to commercial. Between commercials you get DJay's with a serious case of diarrhea mouth. Just endless mindless drivel.... (I was nice. Didn't say what I was thinking, but it rhymes with diarrhea). Then more commercials. Finally they play a song. ONE SONG!!! Repeat commercials and mindless DJ drivel. One of our grocery stores is 10 minutes away. One day on the way to the store I did not hear 1 song. Shopped for 30-40 minutes. Got in car to drive home. Again.... not 1 song. :mad:

So for me.... I won't be without satellite radio. JMO.... As always, your results may vary. :cool:

I haven't heard her live voice in probably 30 years so I wouldn't know. She'd be hard pressed to keep up with herself from her earlier days that's for sure.

I haven't listened to music in my car since about 24 years ago. Last I remember I had a Rage CD playing in my car around 2000. I loved music until the day I thought it died .."died" meaning the worn out stuff as well, not just crap so-called releases.

I miss the old days when bands went through "band bootcamp" - paid their dues and developed a huge fan base while busting their ass to promote themselves. Once their dues were paid and the record companies saw success in them they got their break. The other 98% would ultimately prove they could not cut the mustard. Music was filtered by true demand and fan base that could not be denied. Most internet driven music releases are from the other 98% that I speak of and they poison the pool and it's ruined it completely for me. As far as I can see it 98% of the bands should not have rights to release music. Lol. Don't get me started on the modern "corporate decision" made artists like American Idol and other "artists" that have no fan base but are conjured up by the powers that be. That's even worse.

That last band I knew of that was given a break due to a truly well earned fan base was Dave Mathews. I'm not a fan in the least, but he did build a large base that feels otherwise. I didn't like The Grateful Dead either at all, but they again, built a true base.

Well, if you think about there are probably quite a few bands that were conceptualized even back then.
Record companies had one motive , make money.

I can give you a couple of examples.
From the 60's like the song I did "Hang on Sloopy" and so graciously put your vocal track on.

That song was done by a R&B group , it charted #26 on billboard.
They took the McCoys with Rick Derringer and it hit #1

The Monkey's were mostly just actors but later became musical wonders with songs like "I'm a Believer"

Bob Seger
Britney Spears

I am so sick of hearing those songs over and over again.
Yesterday I went to the thrift store, and they were playing "hit me baby one more time"...

I listen to KPIG, where they never repeat any songs and there is no Top 40 anything.
What a relief.
Sunday night is Grateful Dead live shows, and every show is different.

When I was a kid, my favorite station was KFMH 99+ from Muscatine IA. They also did not play Top 40. Lots of B sides. Made me spend more money than I wanted to on albums after hearing songs off albums that didn’t get play time on Top 40 stations.

Along with rock they did Blues and Jazz, which was pretty cool.

Years later after going out of business…. They reappeared as a Streaming Internet Station. You should check them out.

OK, I'm new here. Yep, I joined just to comment on this thread. (So, Admin please give Amp Mad Scientist a commission for bringing in new forum members, please.) I'll try to be brief, but there is a lot to unpack here. I commend your ability to time travel, as you were listening to Pat Benetar in 1973. I graduated HS in '76. Pat & Neil put out their first album in 1979, the same year I went on the road as a full-time guitar player. (OK, that wasn't nice, but I couldn't resist. I understand. My memory has turned to banana pudding too!)
:) I was aware of "Spider" from his time with the Rick Derringer Band in 1978. He's been one of my favorite guitarists since and is still pulling off those licks in 2024. I agree with you that this is one of those bands that got played "to death" and is still popping up on the radio. (...if anyone listens to that anymore.). I've never bought any of their music, but have seen them twice. By the way, who IS buying music in 2024? My royalty checks have dwindled to nonexistence. Pat and Neil (like so many artists) sold a large portion of their music catalog to Harbourview Equity Partners just last year. and are not making any more royalty money off those tunes, as I understand it. Whenever any of my guitar heroes are playing close by, I have to go see them. If nothing else but to see if they are decaying at the same rate I am! Like you., there is music that still gets played that I am so sick of hearing! We've heard some songs and bands that we don't like our entire lives it seems. But my old ass has to remember that those old songs mean things to old people with many different tastes than I do. If you don't believe me, stand up in the middle of the Rolling Stone concert this summer and scream out, "You guys are beating a dead horse!" Just make sure you are wearing protective headgear. I don't know. I still see those old timey Doo-wop concerts on PBS with the silver hairs clapping and dancing out of time to their childhood songs. I suppose as long as there are enough people alive who still want to hear those songs, she'll have a touring career. Who am I to tell someone to hang it up?

Agreed. We are hoping she (they) play here at our annual 3 day rock fest next year. Many people want to see bands they are familiar with, know the songs that are being played. Thus the word "classic" ( and no, Pat wasn't singing professionally in 1973.)
