Beating the Dead Horse Department: Pat Benatar on Tour Again???

If you could pick 3 singers, that would never be heard on the radio again...
mine would be:
Pat Benatar
Bob Seger
Britney Spears

I am so sick of hearing those songs over and over again.
Yesterday I went to the thrift store, and they were playing "hit me baby one more time"...
I'm going to puke.
Good ones. Mine would be any classic rock altogether or any of that '90s heavy crap.

I saw her in 2011, my daughter loved her and I knew Neil Geraldo was a great player....so we went and it was a great concert. In fact, I lived on Long Island then, and we saw them in Westbury, we were sitting with a bunch of her High School classmates and really had a great time. I'd see her again with my daughter, but I know she can't sing any high notes anymore, and I know they lower the song pitches these days, but it would still be fun.

Haven’t heard about her for what, at least 20-30 years, and in the last couple of years we hear about her shows.
It’s been so long since I have heard and Pat Benatar, I wouldn’t mind hearing some, might have to dig out an old vinyl

I find it interesting that a lot of classic rock songs are now jingles in commercials.
It's what happens when all the bands, singer/songwriters that we listened to as kids have sold their catalogs. And I don't blame them one bit. I say get all you can. Their estates will be way better for it.

Lots of people selling off their excess gear.
Rock is not dead but it has a serious limp. Lol
I still like hearing some the old stuff on the radio from time to time. , even the dreaded “Stairway”

Radio did their best to wear out the biggest hits. It had residuals back then , now since many catalogs are sold we get classic rock car commercials.
Then what ever Ratt was selling.

I do still listen to the radio until I hear Billy Corgan’s voice. Others , Bon Jovi , even to some peoples disgust I don’t like Eddie Vedder but I never liked their music when it was new. I do like Yellow Ledbedder or bed wetter, what ever. Lol
But when ever a song plays from Led Zeppelin 2, I listen.

I can tolerate some of Pat and Neil's rockers. Not the one below.

Bob Seger is on a whole other level of no. Heartland Rock is dreadful from what I can tell.

I know very little Brittany. I quite like it that way.

Pat Benatar? Who is She? It's first time I hear this name. Do she sing this? OMG!

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
She lost me here. Not good.
Well…… you hit it with your best shot.

Once you’ve seen the high energy bands (The Who, Led Zep, etc.) in their prime, there is no going back. If Pete could still slide across the stage on his knees (and get up again,) I’d go to see that.
He may not be able to slide across the stage. But he can still play and sing. Something Daltrey can no longer do. He pretty much destroyed his voice.

Here's a little bit from Austin City Limits a few months back.

Personally, my attitude is if she can still sing the songs (even if she has to lower the key), she has a fan base who wants to see her, and she wants to do it....go for it!

I never really followed her stuff, and I haven't compared this video with her original releases to know if she's lowered the key here, but she seems to be doing a respectable job and the crowd seems to enjoy it.

(As a side note, Neil isn't holding back with that Bigsby on his Les Pauls. I'm guessing he's got quite the decent setup on them!)

I sing, play guitar, slide guitar and harp/harmonica…I’m also a lap steel and bass owner (I own them, play them rudimentarily but do not claim to be an actual player of those instruments).

I’ve never been a professional musician, I’ve never gone on a big tour, I never played gigs for multiples days/weeks in a row.
My little band gigs here and there, we record (home studio) here and there, but it’s just an exercise in creativity and fun and fellowship with my band members.

Nobody will miss us when we’re gone.

However, I’m proud of those songs.
People have said they enjoy them, even before I tell them it’s me playing or that I wrote them.

I’m now in my mid-fifties.

I had three major surgeries in my mid-thirties, the last of which damaged my vocal cords and destroyed the upper register and falsetto of my voice.
I had pneumonia several times in my 30’s and 40’s, which affected my lung capacity.
Age has affected my voice and endurance as a singer as well.
I never smoked, never used drugs and I quit drinking when I was 28, so I’m fortunate that those forms of damage didn’t occur.
So I adjusted the key(s) of my songs and adjusted the set list so the songs harder on my voice would be spread out and kept on chooglin’ (paraphrasing John Fogerty).

I have arthritis and extremely bad eczema, which lowers flexibility in my hands.
I don’t have the time, circumstances and energy to play as often as I did in my twenties and thirties.
I can’t play as well as I used to.
So I changed how (arrangements, etc.) I play my songs (and covers).

So do the performances of a song I wrote in my twenties and recorded in my thirties sound different?

Yeah, sometimes.
Sometimes better—the arrangements aren’t as busy and hit a little harder in their simplicity.
Sometimes better because my voice is richer and more resonant due to age.
Sometimes worse—it would be cool if I could still hit some of the high notes I reached decades ago…
Due to the lung capacity issue, I also can’t sing or play harp for five or six hours straight anymore…three sets of 45 minutes each is just about my extreme limit nowadays.

I have had to adjust things in my playing and singing to continue to make music…

What does this have to do with Pat Benetar and Neil G?

Both are great pros who lived fairly tame lifestyles—they weren’t big party animals—and they truly paid their dues in the 70’s/80’s…but I’d have to assume she can’t hit the high operatic levels she hit in her 20’s-50’s.

I mean, Pavarotti’s abilities at the end of his life were not nearly as impressive—it happens to everyone.

If you liked their music then, you’d probably like their show now—just don’t go expecting Prime 1982 Pat.

Thing about her compared to my previous comment on Daltry. She was classically trained. She learned the proper way to sing and to take care of her voice. I’m sure she’s had to bring the key down and may not be able to hit some of the high notes. She’s 70 and still sounds good.

Daltry did none of that and it shows.
