All right, I'll refer you to my Tone Rooms thread on rebuilding a recently acquired Yamaha RBX170-EW
made in Taiwan in 2013. The RBX170 is a truly entry level instrument, and I wanted to have some
fun making it into a cool custom bass.
All right, this ought to be fun.
(My daughter has a t-shirt that says,
"Go ahead, underestimate me...
That will be fun.")
But I bought a used Yamaha RBX170 EW on impulse... intending to make it playable
and make it durable. It's already very good looking. The price was quite low, so before it
arrived on my porch I was already shopping for parts and reading reviews.
That my friends is also fun.

Here she is today, on 1022 day, at the dark of the moon.
No name yet, this is just as she came from the box.
I was immediately attracted by the natural wood finish. I believe it's a...
I replaced my pickups with the Geezer Butler signature set EMG. I got mine from Sweetwater... you might
find a better price. I thought they were expensive set, until I looked carefully at the description.
The kit includes all wiring, pots and jack, so it was exactly what I wanted... to replace the whole Yamaha
wiring harness with good quality parts. I do know how to solder the connections but with this set
it's all high quality push-on connectors. So it took me about fifteen minutes to install it, not counting the time I took
to shield the cavities with aluminum tape.
I didn't need to shield the cavities, this pickup and wiring set is dead silent. But I did it anyway
just because I had it all taken apart. I bought passive p'ups.
And it sounds great. Highly recommended.
I have recorded a short video to answer the questiion: "What's it sound like then..."
but I don't know how to upload a video. My usual ways of illustrating a thread don't work with a video.
Let's try this way...
what do we do on winter storm days? we make and mend, we snuggle a lot Louise dances her dogs and I make music. Here's a video of a bass I recently refurbished, replacing just about everything I...
