Bass Pups

I have an Ibanez PJ Bass purchased way back in the 90s. You've seen the photos in the hallowed halls of TTR. Recently, as it turns out, I've been playing it more. And as happens with this group....getting the itch to change some things. Like pickups. There is a plethora of PJ pups out there for sale and was looking for some direction and thoughts. Ok..... maybe some hand holding and to more or less get pointed in the right direction.

In a Fender bass, EMG Pickups absolutely kill. Quiet, full-range, powerful, they’re incredibly versatile.

Looks like these are an Active Set. I’d be looking for passive. Not even sure I’ve got room in the control cavity for a battery. Pretty tight.

Seems to be lots of chatter on SD Quarter Pounders. Opinions on those? In researching saw a set of Lollers that sounded interesting and I did buy a set of Strat pups from them that I really like.

All right, I'll refer you to my Tone Rooms thread on rebuilding a recently acquired Yamaha RBX170-EW
made in Taiwan in 2013. The RBX170 is a truly entry level instrument, and I wanted to have some
fun making it into a cool custom bass.

I replaced my pickups with the Geezer Butler signature set EMG. I got mine from Sweetwater... you might
find a better price. I thought they were expensive set, until I looked carefully at the description.
The kit includes all wiring, pots and jack, so it was exactly what I wanted... to replace the whole Yamaha
wiring harness with good quality parts. I do know how to solder the connections but with this set
it's all high quality push-on connectors. So it took me about fifteen minutes to install it, not counting the time I took
to shield the cavities with aluminum tape.

I didn't need to shield the cavities, this pickup and wiring set is dead silent. But I did it anyway
just because I had it all taken apart. I bought passive p'ups.
And it sounds great. Highly recommended.

I have recorded a short video to answer the questiion: "What's it sound like then..."
but I don't know how to upload a video. My usual ways of illustrating a thread don't work with a video.
Let's try this way...

So....

There are great passive pickups.

There are EMG active pickups and every single original series is great.

They have the sound you need.

They have the sound you didn't know you need.
