Thanks! I actually went to Pompeii in 2016 and they have a huge Pink Floyd display documenting that performance. They play PF music as well...

It was a fantastic experience! I wish I could have stayed a few months instead of a few weeks...

I also wish I could have seen David Gilmour play there and reprise the role he played in the first show. I did go see that concert at the
theater last year just as I saw the original show at the theater when I was a kid...

But...and this is a real question...how can you know what you actually like if you are limiting the sample size? In reality, objectively, you are missing out on things if you don't try them.

I search out new food, booze (especially booze), music, experiences and places constantly, and I am constantly updating the database of preferences in my melon. I'd feel very limited if I had gotten to a certain point and considered it "enough" and chose to exclude new information.

I suppose its the 'Rain Man' aspect of my personality at work. I love to read and frequently read about new or interesting topics for no reason at all.

Music is different. My tastes and tonal preferences are extremely narrow. Most new music disappoints me, 5FDP, Volbeat, GVF, Rival Sons and Ghost being the noted exceptions...

My wife is very adventurous and as a result, we are always trying new things... :-)

about trying new stuff, I get in a comfort pattern but remind myself to take a look around now and then.
I finally tried a gyro I kept wanting to try but didn't.
kinda like a Greek taco, I love it!!

Nowhere in my post did I say being obsessed with a particular band limited my focus and/or kept me from listening to or discovering new music...

I listen to more genres and time frames of music than most people out there. I really don't understand how people keep equating my love of Pink Floyd
and David Gilmour to ignoring other music????????? It's baffling....

Here...let me give you some genres I listen to...

If you saw my immense and diverse music collection you would be astounded I promise you...

Classic Rock
Rock & Roll
Heavy Metal
Reggae
Jazz
90's Rap
Surf

...and more.

I'd start a list of bands, but I'd be here all day long.

Ive had a closer connection to this band than any other-- might even call it a STICKY situation or difficult separations---- with this band almost my WHOLE LIFE

The only band I ever was a "fanatic" about, reading gossip stories, books about their lives and childhoods, etc. would be The Beatles.
First band I really was into as I became a serious music listener as a young teen.
I am familiar with most of their music catalog but not every song from every record.

My only other band I followed / listened to as deeply immersed is Led Zeppelin.
Introduced me, or I realized, the blues roots. (stolen or uncredited, or not)
I never pursued the fan aspect of them but know the studio discography up through In Through the Out Door very well. I have heard Coda but dont know it well.

thanks again here to @gball, who turned me on to How The West Was Won.

But like others, I have many other bands whose music I have a deep interest in and have a thorough familiarity of some, or several, of their records.

I was never a Pink Floyd fan. Their music just wasn't heavy enough to grab me. However, I really loved "On The Turning Away. "

This is fairly typical of my musical tastes - i often like only one, maybe two songs by an artist or group. The Beatles are one such band - I loved "Revolution" and "Twist and Shout."

From Clapton, I only dug "Forever Man." From SRV I only liked "Crossfire." From Rick Derringer I only liked "....Rock N Roll Hoochie Coo."

From Kiss I liked "Lick It Up" and "Heaven's On Fire." I dug just a few songs by Ratt, only two songs by Quiet Riot,

Now, with Motorhead and AC/DC, I liked all their songs. Same with Scorpions. Same with Ozzy...Maiden, Priest.

So, my musical interests are extremely narrow, but a custom CD would have a wide variety of different songs - maybe only two from a particular artist.

I only liked a couple of 'G-N-R' songs (Welcome to the Jungle, November Rain)..maybe three from 'Dokken,' (Breaking The Chains, The Hunter, In My Dreams) one from 'Lynch Mob,' (Wicked Sensation)so, you kinda get the idea...

Never was grabbed by anything from Queen, Aerosmith, or Rush.

Modern music is much the same. For example, I enjoyed "Stacey's Mom," (Fountains of Wayne)"Girls Don't Like Boys," (Good Charlotte) "Unholy Confessions," (A7X) "Seal The Deal" (Volbeat) "I'm Going To Hell" (The Pretty Reckless) all receive honorable mention.

From a concert standpoint, I would go see Ghost, 5FDP, BOC, Maiden, Priest and Scorpions, but I wouldn't sit through any others for one or two songs.

Lately, I have really immersed myself in our music. Listening to tracks in the car, on headphones while doing housekeeping, thinking about new solo ideas, just really submerging myself into our own musical culture....

The point is you listened first and then decided...that does not narrow your view it focuses it on what your ears like.

It wasn't really in reference to your original post. I was curious about Robert's comment on not trying new things.
