Are You Obsessed With a Particular Band?

I try to keep an open mind in music I'm in a top 40 band that's what people want the hear not what I wish to play but filling up the dance floor is my goal and we play request songs that will keep you out of your comfort zone. In 1975 I went to a Bad Company concert 85% women eye candy everywhere I don't care to see a bunch of dudes. I want to see the hot babes shaking their stuff.

Agreed!!! Pay da bills!!! Up until recently, I was playing bass in a blues band - 5 days/nights (a mix) a week - making $500/week. I stayed with them for a year and worked on side projects too during that time. Not a king's ransom, but it was fun money....but I got to where I just dreaded the music and that crowd, so I bowed out.

I'm making $0.00 in this new band (just starting up) but I love it...

Hmmmm....I can relate, at least to some degree, with my tastes in food or wine for that matter. I am extremely focused. I like what I like and I really don't bother with experimenting and I never feel as though I missed out on anything. Musically, I am much the same way. I don't need a roomful of guitars, since I only attach to one or two - perhaps three - at the very most. I don't like to sound different. I dig my tone and stick with it. I like a guitar to have the same feel - and if I were to reach for a backup - I want everything to be as close to identical as possible.

I can relate Rob fully with these comments.

A Band that I have always had a strong attachment to is The Guess Who. Always been fascinated with the quality of Burton Cummings vocals, and the collaboration of music between Burton and Randy Bachman. There have been a few guitar players who have had an influence in my playing and Randy is definitely one of them.

Robert 5 nights a week is hard core. When I was in my early 30'S I went on tour 6 months on the road was enough to last a life time every one except me turned into a junkie and they spent
all the money we were making I had no Idea what was going on they all hid it from me well. Scott told me 10 years later his is still alive the rest are dead.

I never felt like music was work, so to me, even 5 nights a week felt like a paid vacation, compared to picking grapes in Ducor, California for 13 cents a box.

I was around all kinds of drugs, but never had the desire.

You are lucky to be alive!!!! Seriously!!!

I'll hand it to you guys. I will not play music I don't love, not for money, sex or otherwise. I also won't play other people's music, so doing the bar band thing is a non-starter for me. If I could find the right people again and get out with original material I would, because that's where my passion is, but if it doesn't happen that's fine too. I love playing live but I won't play covers under any circumstances.

I can appreciate how you feel....but $800/week changes my musical tolerance level dramatically....

This probably sounds sh!ttier than it should, but I frankly don't need the money and $800 isn't enough to get me to want to learn and play music I don't like. My time is worth far more to me than that and I already trade enough/too much of it for money in my office each day.

I don't "need" it but I like getting paid to play music. I'd play the Devil's birthday party if the money was right...the music money allows me to do things for my wife that she doesn't expect. That makes me very happy.... :-)

Can't say anyone is wrong for doing it, just not for me. And TBH, I work so much that the best thing I can do for my wife these days is just spend time with her, so there's another reason I guess.

I quit playing my original songs live in 1992 I have a bunch of them that hit the charts not by me. Linda or LZ as she goes by sang with us at the end of the night she said boy Steve you sure did a great job look how every one is so happy that's what it's all about. My wife asked me what I wanted in life I said a fence for my dogs at her house and a woman I could trust Anna said is that all ??
I said that's a lot. What do you want Anna a Drummer are you willing to learn sure I'll be back. Set up my DW Collectors drum set played for Anna 45min. She said your a kick-ass Drummer
Well I had one of the best teachers in the world. I played drums for her every day all original songs I wrote, on her death bed in ICU she wrote me a letter I made her life complete.

Very cool, Chris at Pompeii!!

about trying new stuff, I get in a comfort pattern but remind myself to take a look around now and then.
I finally tried a gyro I kept wanting to try but didn't.
kinda like a Greek taco, I love it!!

JT, if you ever get a chance, try Greek Grape leaves, OMG my dad's neighbor ladies make them for him and I thought they were very delicious.
Also, I think the first Greek food I ever tried was called Souvlaki.

yes........
