Are String Trees Necessary???

This guy gives a more thorough explanation of some of what I was saying. Ultimately, I think that even a small angle is sufficient to keep a string sufficiently stable in the nut. I think the issues begin to become more apparent with bending and trems.

 
But that’s not the general Fender aesthetic. With Fender’s traditional flat headstocks and inline tuners, the high strings have a longer distance between the nut and tuning posts, requiring the installation of a string guide. They might be small, but they can have a big impact in your tone and tuning.
 
I don't have them on my Strat, but I am using Sperzel staggered tuners. I do have one on my bass with a Jazz style neck. Knowing how persnickety you are about set up I would install them with the tuners you are using. Why even set yourself up for aggravation?
String trees add friction. If you use the tremolo, string trees can contribute to tuning instability. Otherwise, they do more good than harm but I don't use them if I don't have to.
