Another NAD!

The power tubes are unchanged and are the stock Marshall branded EL34.
There is now an ECC823 in V1. Then a 5751, EC83MG and a balanced 5751 in the PI spot. The ECC823 in V1 has the first half of the tube same as a 12AX7 but the second half of the tube is a 12AU7. This keeps the clean channel the same but reduces the gain on the OD channel. Much more useable. All the new pre tubes are JJs.
I have rebiased slightly as the amp was balanced but was slightly cool at 36mA per side. I bumped the bias up to 38.5mA.
The gain on the OD channel is now a bit lower but much tighter and not flabby or mushy. The high end fizziness that the DSL40C is known for is now gone. All in all, the amp is much improved, IMHO.

My sincere thanks go out to Robert Herndon as I would never have stumbled upon this winning formula without his advice! Thank you Robert!!!!

Dude!!!!! Awesome news!!!!

I have to credit Sysco and Hack for the tip on the EC82. That tube was a huge improvement.

Thanks, amingos... :)

Finding the other tubes took weeks of swapping out tubes, waiting for more new tubes to arrive and sitting and listening to recorded passages over and over again to finally find the combo i eventually settled on.

I love hearing about guys who are happy with their gear and for such minimal $$$$ invested!!!!!!

Latest update:

After some advice from our Robert Herndon, I swapped out all the preamp tubes with what he is running in his. WOW...I mean WOW! This amp is now absolutely amazing sounding and the characteristic bass mushiness and top end fizz is gone. It is a beast!

I can’t wait for this lockdown to end so I can get to the rehearsal room to really open this amp up!
I did the same with both of mine .
And you sir are correct, they slay now, and all the clips I put up last Sunday are with that tube combo.
Cheers

That's a very similar recipe Goldmember gave me to tame my DSL 15.
The ECC823 is a big game changer. No more harsh fizziness on the red channel.
Highly recommended tube.
Time to find a couple more 5751's. They work wonders everywhere.
Great info, thanks.

I own a DSL15C, and it’s indeed a little screaming rascal when you pass 9’clock of gain in the red channel.

I bought it a while ago (second hand), and it’s actually a very fine (Go anywhere) amp.

First thing i did, was to swap the 12” speaker to a V30. A lot better ..!!

Next thing, Get rid of some hum, and make CH2 more useful. I’ve read about mod’s (R82 etc), but prefer no to go there.

I’ll try a tube swap V1 to Ecc832 first.
Anyone tried other mods on this amp.?

Ok... that works wonders

CH1: Unaffected, still as beautiful as it already was
CH2: More playroom on Gain settings. (And still a lot available)

Stock was more like an on/off switch, and very delicate to dial in properly.
that’s a lot better now.

This tube workes, and makes this DSL15C to a wonderful little amp.

No need for further mods on the PCB, to my opinion.
Maybe i'll put in a FX loop later, but there's not really a need to i think.
I don't use them much (sometimes Delay or Chorus), Can still put the effects in front for the occasion.

The (Stock) Marshall Ecc83 / 12AX7 tube that came out of V1, has a yellow marking on top ...?

Is there a particular reason for this.?

I’m not sure. I have never heard of this. My DSL40C had an Electro Harmonix in V1 so I am of no help.........just like usual!

3 months now, to play around with my DSL15C/V30, and the ECC823 tube mod ...

still very happy with it. Needs no more mods.
actually, I play CH2 more than CH1 now.
gain settings mostly on 2, and play with guitar volume between crunch and classic rock. (Gain on 3 when a little more bite is needed).

Really happy now, and i feel sorry for those who did away their DSL15c to soon.

I really love this little amp now ..!!!
It just needs a tube to get into the happy zone
