Another another Tele build (sorry Ramo)

Like a few of you here, I have a Tele body blank. Ash. Been working on shaping the body before I get a neck, bridge, etc.

My question tonight. I want to stain this something like an emerald green then clear it with Tru Oil.

I can find green stain. They seem to be water based and just not sure they'd be compatible with Tru Oil.

Thoughts?

Sunset Fungiburst.

This applies more to Gibson 3way- 4 knob wiring but Ive heard of folks using a 250k in the bridge and a 500k in the neck. The logic behind this is to compromise with the p90 since its in the middle of a standard single coil and a humbucker. Basically, with a 250k in the bridge you are using a warmer sounding pot and in the neck a 500k will brighten it up some. Some go completely backwards on this conversely though.

But in your case you gotta settle for one main volume pot on the tele style wiring. So a 250k will sound better in the bridge than on the neck. But a 500k will choke the bridge some. So you are 6 of one, half a dozen of the other lol

There's also the 2nd compromise of 300k pots which are right in the middle?
I had seen mentioned the 300k option.

Got a bit of an update boys and girls. Fabbed up a switch plate using balsa, fiberglass and carbon fiber. Still have some finish work to do on the plate. Make it shiny. But here’s what it’s going to look like mounted up. Tone and Vol pot knobs are ebony as is the LP 3-way switch knob…. Courtesy our very own RVA.

Next up….. pick guard. Since I’m doing P90s, gonna do dog ear ones. Mounted pick guard. Will not be the standard Tele pick guard. Will also be carbon fiber.

So a bit of an update. Decided to bolt things up so I could cut a template for the pick guard. Once I get the template made, I’ll cut out and fab the pick guard. Disassemble and start slapping the clear on the body….. but this is kinda what it’s gonna look like.

Neck is Warmoth. Roasted maple neck. Ebony fretboard. Gotoh locking tuners. I’m getting there boys and girls.

As y'all can tell. I sometimes suffer from lack of ambition. This project has drug out way longer than was planned. But I'm getting there. About done with the clear. Several coats of TruOil. May get a few more before I'm satisfied with results. But I'm almost to the wiring and assembly stage. I may be playing this thing before winter is over. And frankly, it about flippin' time. And I only blame myself. Here a few updated photos.

Looks good.Love the fret markers.Only thing i see that might be a problem is the Bridge P90 is pretty tall and on a slab top yoi might have trouble getting the string heigth down to normal to clear that pickup.front one looks like a Duncan Antiquity and there alot shorter. Maybe its the camera angle.Hope ya get it put together.

Yep. Good eye. I did notice the height. Hopefully it works out. And yes. Both are SD Antiquity P90s.

Nice! Coming along!!
Question - will the strings / saddle height clear the surface mount P90's?
You may need to shim the rear end of the neck pocket I think?
I have never had them so I don't know how tall they are off the deck.

@johnnygoo raised the same question. Bit worried now. Dummy me hadn’t considered that. Crossing fingers.

Not all P90s are as tall as others.Didnt mean to worry you but on slabtop guitars its more critical than archtops.

No problem sir. When I set the thing up for the photo op I noticed the bridge pup seemed taller than I anticipated. I WILL figure out how to make it all work. Already have a Tele knockoff with regular single coils. I really wanted one with P90s. Thing is.... you mentioned it. Now @jtcnj mentioned it. And when I shared the same photos with Ray and Adrian....Ray mentioned it. So already have my pea brain working on a solution if a problem does arise.

Do you have the bridge yet?
Don't think I saw one in any of the parts mock-ups.
Wouldn't be too difficult to check clearances with all the parts in place.

I do have the bridge. Just didn’t stick it on the body for the photo op. But I’m starting to think I may have to rethink the pups and get the more correct set. These won’t get wasted. Might plant them on my Hagstrom Viking. First I’ll see if everything mounts up okay as things sit.

Hard to tell from a photo at an angle.
Looks like you have (have had) the neck mounted.
Set the pups and bridge in place and lay a long straight edge across the frets and bridge to see where you're at.
Adding some thin spacers like a paint stir stick on the frets can approximate string height.

As has been mentioned, a neck shim can get you a little extra height, along with some amount of setback angle.
(I have neck shims in all my home builds... ;))
You could also check out the height adjustment range in the bridge saddles.
Perhaps rethinking is not necessary, but you won't know unless you lay it out. :yesway:

Neck was not bolted on as I'm still messing with the body. It was just set in the pocket for the photo op. I have no doubt in the photo it looked a little out of whack. And I'll what you suggest here before I actually pull the plug and do Plan B..... or whatever letter I'm up to by this point.
