Announcing... RiffMasters!

Just so you fellas know I double-posted the list of entries and the links to all the songs in the closet section also... because I kinda knew the vote post in this thread would get buried

Round 2 entries

Has link to poll website also.
Easier to find. But I though it would be nice to have a record also in this thread.

that would be a great place to repost the Folk'd-Ups you had to put aside for this vote.

Right now I count a 6-way tie for first place. C-Grin leading because he managed to work up a very early entry. May prove to be the smart sort of decision dudes zooming on Mountain Dew hardly ever make!

The field is gonna change though. I expect more voters to come in today and tonight.

@ibmorjamn ... Don't get I am cranky at You! Just glad to see all the participation. Sorry your deadline production was not what you were hoping for. I used to work in broadcast news for years. Every day a damn deadline sometimes you just gotta let 'er fly and cross your fingers baby

Good luck to the competitors.

I did try to do the Folk Challenge in both directions with a few different songs, but it just didn't come together.
Recording / production is all new to me as well and the game did push me back into learning, so that was a plus.

It was fun until it wasn't after the personal attacks during the duel thing.
Just like in the Game of Tones, ego reveals more of the true nature of some people.

I'm probably the least skilled on this forum, and have always been reluctant to post any of my playing.
I'll leave this to the "real" guitar players, and continue my journey and enjoyment of the hobby.

@jtcnj I'd look at what went down with your duel round as more of a misunderstanding of RFM gameplay and general TTR culture. Shake it off

As you can see, overall the vibe is steering positive and supportive, and this all little more than a fun diversion from our generally mundane lives LOL! Recording contracts or Vegas residences are not at stake here. That I know of! We are all improving together.

If you pick and choose of the eight challenges ahead and focus on the many positive comments you gained and will recieve, they're likely to accelerate learning and benefit your musical life. I find my own learning tends to be all about pushing past barriers. Mental, physical, creative.

Just one more entry and you'll reach the level above busker. I thought you'd be the first, but I understand where you are coming from too, sometimes a production just doesn't come together and is :poo:. I posted one of my musical turds (of which there are many) in the odds and ends thread

Like Gretzky said: you miss out on 100% of the shots you don't drink (something like that).

Don't be down on yourself. I enjoyed hearing you play and participate.
I don't think you are the least skilled.
Recording mixing and arranging used to be left to engineers. Now we have access to the tools.

Recording is a tight rope walk. Balance can be hard to achieve. Especially with multiple tracks.
I look at it like this. We are students to some degree and if someone is better, you can learn from them.

Some of the guys hear have been Recording for years but you have start somewhere.

Buddy, you're far from the least skilled: that would be the person typing this right now lol. And the way I see it, attitudes have no place here when it comes to skill levels, because quite frankly if anyone was THAT good, they wouldn't be hanging on this forum, rather playing at THE Forum

I have to say this about the 2nd challenge.
It was harder than first one.
I had another song I really like and worked on it for maybe a week or so.
I got pulled in another direction.

The Rock to folk was a damn the torpedoes decision. My wife thinks I should have left that in the submission and she could be right.

Once the ice storm hit I was hell bent for 4 days on end. I made so many tracks.
It became a mess. It still is.

I agonized over my poll entry decision. Had pm discussions over it. Maybe those fellas didn't have my best interests at heart LOL!!! Nah, I think they did.

Four or five times more work and care went into the piece I didn't enter. I hadda go my gut on song choice and the much more early entry, and the "Folk-up" of a metal classic because I learned from the tied vote bump factor in the first round.

Therein lies the rub of this style of round with two possible entries... making a tough choice.

But even for the next, round and the next after... Do you bang something out as fast as you can for the time advantage ? Or take your time to polish something up real good.

I think "Sickness" would still be at or near the top of the heap even if it had come in only 3 days ago.

Song Choice / Entertainment Factor / Spontanaity may prove a powerful foil against "slick" in this game... can one find a balance between the two? Perhaps we shall see!

Hey brother I don’t wish to beat a dead horse, but whatever you do with your playing and music just have fun. For me it’s what I love to do. I never get as much time to do it, but that’s life. Play because you want to on your terms, and you are doing just fine. We are all our own worst critic and I know my own limitations and feel like whatever I post is simply crap. But dance like no one’s watching and I hope you can just have a bit of fun with it. This game is also a GREAT way to improve so even if you don’t post them(but please do) play along anyway.

I hope that didn’t sound self righteous or sanctimonious, just hoping to help, peace my friend.

I absolutely am having a blast with this, but it is in my nature to just “wing it” pretty much full time. I am constantly amazed by the creativity and persistence of the rest of you. I hope to learn much from you guys.

Funny enough my kid is an audio / media engineer and he just shakes his head at my recordings. I would be very much worse at it without his help.

@C-Grin :pound-hand: :pound-hand:
I'll bet you are a blast with the guitar around the fire pit and a couple Mountain Dews under your belt

Just was thinking about when I first built this game on paper last summer (didn't even have a name for it yet), this "Folk'd Up" theme was initially slated quite a bit later in the game. It was going to be Heavy Rock ->Folk only... I had another separate round that was going to be the reverse.

It was sort of only last minute I decided to add the alternate and combine because I came up with a great idea for another round and had to meld two into one to make room. I also thought it would be a bit more inclusive for some TTR members to have a folk possibility scheduled in earlier.

I also saw 5 weeks was too long to wait for some creative madmen hungry for even more musical challenge.

I think overall it worked out pretty good... though members are accumulating points faster than I had anticipated... because of the bonus challenges added, the single points etc...

May change the end goal to 125 pts... or just an overall total point tally at the end of ten rounds, will probably be better. Not super important, but gotta be upfront about that

Thought some of you might find that interesting.

Uhm..... did you listen to my submission? You least skilled? I think not. Not only could I have played better.... sure as heck could have sung better. As for the recording part.... I seriously messed up using my living room. We hadn't put all the furniture back in after the work we'd had done. There was only a few pieces of furniture to soak up sound, so I ended up with a lot of natural reverb/echo.... and not in a planned good way. Like many others have already said, I've always enjoyed the tunes you've shared. Please keep sharing.

As for this particular round. I had less an issue going from rock to folk than folk to rock. Once I figured out Rock and Roll Al Night would more or less fit Blowin' In The Wind.... the rest was practicing till I made it fit and I got more or less comfortable. I have two or three acoustic folk type songs in mind that I've tried to "rock" up and I just haven't been able to figure out a best way.

I do really hope you are not leaving the game ..
I for one am amazed at the talent this forum has , and I believe I am not as talented as some of you think, I just have no fear in my lack of recording skills, and just let them fly.
But as I can see by this game , I need to buck up and get with it, plus it will get me to practice more than I have been.

Thanks for listening

You are so right on all accounts.

Make the extra point 1.5 instead .
