Get a kit from a reputable supplier, Robert.
A Champ kit is a great way to learn how things work.
I've built an 18 watt Marshall clone and a Princeton Reverb clone and lived to tell about it.
Both very enjoyable experiences.
One cautionary thing that I haven't seen mentioned is soldering barefoot.
Not only is molten solder hot when it hits skin, but bare feet on tile seem to be a pretty good path to ground.
I can attest to this personally as a soldering iron I was using had cracks in the insulation in the power wire.
I received several nice tingles that made me grab some shoes & buy a new soldering iron.
Amps are indeed fun, but working on electric forklifts will really get your attention.
A 36 volt SCR system has enough amperage to blow a screwdriver apart.
And when something arcs, boy is it a pretty light show.
Be safe people, you only get to die once.
