All of the Offset Talk Lately...

All of the offset guitar talk lately has made me want to do something that I had been putting off for quite a while now.
A few years ago, I picked up a Squier Mustang. A crazy cheap little axe, that I chose in black with an actual rosewood board(I believe...sure looks and feels like rosewood), and a really weird but cool pair of humbuckers. They had personalities anyway, and I was not unhappy with them. I decided to leave them in there, even though that was not the original plan.
Well, last night I decided that it was time to go with the original plan....
I decided to pull the pickups out of this:

My old, now retired ESP LTD Horizon.
The bridge pickup is an old Duncan Screamin’ Demon, and the neck pickup is an old Duncan Seth Lover:

I was just gonna toss them in the pool....365E6C70-19A8-42C8-8AB9-46D588D8DAAD.jpeg
...and see if they’d swim...
After some gentle, free hand, dremmel work...and some persuasion on the old wires finding new routing....

It is a new beast. It’s kind of wild now...I haven’t heard this pickup set in a while. I almost forgot how much I liked them.
Anywho...that was my “fun” last night and today....maybe I’ll make a clip, or video, later on...got some yard work to do after lunch. :)

these little Squire Mustangs are stupid good for the $$$ was going to pound some FAKE Artec GRETSCH A Trons in it-- but guitar madness SOLD OUT of them
Im now contemplating some minihumbuckers......though those MIGHT sound better (and more GIBBO-ish) in my SG ........

thoughts?

If you’re thinking of slapping them in to a Mustang swimming pool rout, watch the leg length. My Seth Lover is long legged, and nearly bottomed out. I had to trim the adjustment screws down by about 2mm....it was either that, or start drilling. I can still lower the pickup about 1.5 mm from where it sits, but that’s it really. It is sitting at spec height now, so no problem there.
The Screamin Demon has short legs, so that was not an issue at all.

thta was a concern -- these little mustangs are THIN ---like WAFER thin........as in HALF of the Les Paul Recordings PANCAKE body -- thin not kidding -- I measured it -- dont remeber the actual numbers but they were within a 1/16 of inch ish -- or so their abouts

Yeah, when I test fit, before I soldered everything up ;) , the legs fit when the pickup was at the height i was looking for. I did not test fit with the adjustment screws in place though:(. So, when everything was soldered up and screwed in to place, I learned of the issue. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to bow the pickguard when I tried to seat it properly. I nipped a couple/few threads worth off, and no more problem.
Looks great.
Thanks Goo!!!(y)

hhhhhhmmmmmmmmm.
Maybe I like the humbuckers.............. lol
It wasn’t THAT bad. I just wanted to be straight about the difficult points. If I had not tried to install one covered, long legged, humbucker with a classic braided lead wire, it would not have been much trouble at all.
Short legged open coil humbuckers, with thin wire leads, fit perfectly well...and the wires are easier to conform to the routing.

Looks great Don and I know what you mean by the braided doh.
I am still looking for a clip though!!
Cheers
Mitch
Thanks @Mitch Pearrow SJMP ! I’m sorry to report.... I’m done for today. The lawn in the section that I did today was tall, thick, and lush....and a lot of work for me to get through. It’s one of the penalties for living against the edge of a Northern swamp....the low areas stay too soft to mow, but the grass does love to grow. The only engine my lawnmower has is me, so...
Dinner was late(just finished), and I have to go to work in the morning.(that was kinda weird to type) We’re doing some curbside service, since we can’t actually open for a little bit longer...it’s my turn tomorrow. But it should be an early day, and if I don’t get sucked in to another project...I will get right to it, because this guitar is worth it (IMO)! I jammed on it for a while today. It loves the Muff, and works really well with the @syscokid Treble Booster.... This thing brings the Tool, the Sabbath, the Soundgarden...all kinds of heavy goodness. It does well clean too...though I honestly didn’t spend much time there today...just a taste here and there.

First of all, your Seth Lover pup is priceless, IMO. I just touched myself even more when I noticed the signatures on your Seth Lover! My '08 G&L Bluesboy has the SD Seth Lover pup in the neck, and on that guitar it is quite capable in creating beautiful tones. I thinks it's unpotted, too...

And ha ha... I also have an old Screamin' Demon sitting very quietly in a file drawer. Me thinks I bought it back in the 90's. It resided in my old SG for many years. Excellent pickups that work extremely well in a bright Marshall-style amp. I hope to repurpose this old pup one day... :fingersx:

Thanks! I installed these pickups in that Horizon in 1997. They were purchased at local mom and pop shops...long before I had any internet access for this type of thing. I loved the Horizon, and it was my main gigging guitar from 97 to around 06-07(when I got my first Gibson Les Paul, and decided that I’d found “my happy place”). So anyway.... I’ll say it here and now....these pickups work well together. An alnico 2 in the unpotted(yep spellcheck doesn’t like that, “unpotted“ - wow that was crazy...it changed it four times...wow)Seth Lover at the neck, and an alnico 5 in the heavily potted Screamin Demon at the bridge...they were/are fantastic together. I could/would totally gig this guitar with confidence(and much internal laughter) right now....no hesitation.
