After 30 Years, I'm Back To A 1987 Stratocaster:

The funny thing about this old Stratocaster is how effortless it is to play. On the SG, I really have to work at it to get notes to sound just right, but on the Stratocaster, it just seems to play itself.

That may be an indication that an SG just isn't for you. There's nothing wrong with that. That's sort of a "different strokes for different folks" thing.

Perhaps, building a Parts-caster to your liking is the way to go?

Or maybe he just has to find THE right SG.

That's what happened to me. I owned a G400 and never could bond with it. It was just not comfortable for my body and my grip. I thought (and often said) I just wasn't an SG guy... Until I got my '61 Reissue. ENTIRELY different guitar and feels like it was tailored for me.

For me, its about being able to play aggressively and accurately. With the Stratocaster, I can beat the hell out of it and notes are always clean...albeit effortless. The Gibson takes a lot more effort to play cleanly...higher frets, higher action...more concentration.

If this guitar has such history with you, and feels so good, why change it?

To each his own, the guitar is yours and you can do whatever you want with it,
but if I were you, I wouldn't mod it. I'd keep it as it is and use its features
(the ones you like about it) to build another strat like it with the different pups.
Or make your Gibson become something more like what you want.
I say this because I own a guitar that has a similar pathos for me.
So I keep it, won't part with it and wouldn't mod it.
Btw one of the reasons for me to buy the Gibson SG was exactly
me not wanting to put humbuckers in my strats...

But that's me, just giving my own point of view

I agree with this 100% and will now state my dopey and not to be well received opinion:

An SG is all about the shape and feel of the body. Unless you hack up the body contours
it is still an SG no matter what you do with or to the electronics and hardware. There have
been SGs with humbuckers, p90s, 3 singlecoils, Bigsbys, active electronics and pretty
much every combination of the above. All of them were still unquestionably SGs.

A Stratocaster is it's own distinct and unique sounding beast.
A Stratocaster is all about the sound of 3 single coil pickups.
As soon as you "drop in a humbucker", like it or not,
the guitar is no longer a Stratocaster.

Not open for debate.
My world, my rules.

Yeah, the SG is not for everyone. I love them but don't have one at the moment because I love other guitars more. It's OK.

One idea, instead of routing for a full-size humbucker maybe try something like these: http://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/little-59-strat-neck

I've had really good results using the SD Strat-sized 'buckers. They give you the balls and warmth (and lack of noise) of a humbucker but retain the essential "strattiness" that makes the guitars unique.

This is absolutely true.

I think there must be a stone tablet inscribed in Runic at Stonehenge that says the same thing.

Yup, Robert. That's why you're at THIS forum. It's okay if you decide you don't prefer an SG. Nobody's gonna hate you.

THAT is what I would do too. Then, without hacking the Strat, you can try all pup combinations possible.

Although I'm have never been a huge fan of Fenders, I have to admit that the one MIM Strat I have does tickle a certain fancy. It has that typical Strat sound that fits well with some of the music I play. Since I have always been a player, I am less concerned about how it makes the sound... just that it has it. The first show I did with my Strat, I had a lot of people that know I'm an SG person drop their jaws.......... :celebrate2:

I just scored a pair of genuine Gibson 57 Classisc...wax potted and with factory reverse polarity to reduce hum...these are the 'new generation' wound in November 2016.

Here is what I am doing to the old Strat pictured above...Brown tortoise shell with covered Gibson 57 Classics....

Look at how I routed the bridge pocket in 2003....and then painted it to match. I only cut enough for the pickup to clear....
