A Student Told Me He Wanted To Quit:

Good point. I understand putting the people in their place who denigrate other's equipment but the generalizations as presented in this thread can be a bit insulting.
I spend far more on gear and gas etc than I ever make playing even though we get paid something for it. It matters not as long as we are enjoying ourselves.
As mentioned elsewhere I for one am GLAD I do not HAVE to play to make the bills. I can sit on the couch n scratch the nads, it's just the same! :D

I told him what I thought and I felt that the people who were trashing his equipment had, not only no right to do so, but had no factual basis upon which to base their claims.

They were passing off an opinion as fact and that's why I responded the way that I did.

No offense meant to present company.

I agree. Too many people judge others based on their gear.
The way it was worded made it sound like anyone not making a living playing had a meaningless opinion, which actually really means little in terms of one's knowledge of gear.
What you just said above really hits it home, it is because it is opinion only, not fact as they seemed to state.
I should add no real offence taken, I am not some delicate flower that is easily offended.
Cheers

I think your point is a valid one - a knowledge sharer is different than a snob. However, what Robert said was very different.

Context.

If you - as a bedroom player - offer an opinion on gear, I would consider it an educated opinion.

If you were to tell someone their guitar "sucked" and went on to iterate that they would never get a decent sound out of their entry-level gear, I would take issue with that statement, and I believe fairly so.

Constructive criticism and recommendations based on experience are valid. But, mean spirited bullying is not.

Tube amp superiority is an absolute certainty.
All these solid state gizmos........are just trying to imitate the sound of a tube amp.

If there were no tube amps, there would be no profiler to imitate tube amps.

Incidentally, I think transistors suck eggs....I think they sound like absolute garbage.

Although we can understand the constant barrage of idiocy posted on internet sites...
He shouldn't be quitting.
He should be saving money for a good guitar and amp.
And that's no reason to give up playing.
AMS -- your logic is so flawed its AMAZING to the point of humorous

I guarantee you SS amps and low $ imports KEEP Fender Corp and Gibson Inc IN BUSINESS the few buying high end high dollar products is the "icing" on the Corporate Profit cake and much much much lower VOLUME than the low ball stuff -- period --

I KNOW Dean Inc sells WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more imports (making infinitely more profit) than they do the custom shop usa stuff -- period -- Ive seen it in action (good business model)

YOUR un wavering "logic" -- is 100% the problem--

solid state and digital do not suck (the volume of sales and available products proves that weather you like it or not) -- outside of YOUR personal opinion-- (and thats all your little rant above is)

This has been said on this forum before:
"like what you like play what you play ---but DONT :poo: on others because they like what they like "

THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT TO ROBERTS STORY !!! which you totally missed and pulled out your TUBES ARE GOD soap box crap.

IF you have a problem with NOT allowing others to like what they like, PERHAPS you have a problem with being on this forum ?

I did not miss your OTHER point. I think in making it, you betrayed your true feelings.

I suppose it can be taken several ways, depending on many factors.

I've made purchases based on recommendations from hobby players in this forum because they had hands-on experience with a piece of gear. That alone should be sufficient to refute allegations of some clandestine effort to render the opinion of a hobby player as "meaningless."

However, I do consider those who make others feel inferior based on opinions unsupported by fact to be "meaningless."

I am glad you can continue to own what you laid down. I will try to get a gig so I am worthy of an opinion.

I really feel like this is being taken out of context.

How many times have you recommended a fret file or a piece of gear to me???

I find value in your opinions.

You - nor anyone else here - was the subject of my comment.
