2021 Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's Gold Top:

Gball, when you said you lowered your pups way down, Were these BB's or 490 or what?

Stock BB 1 and 2. I have the exact same model that Robert does, just bought mine about a year ago.

But I also had the '57's in my Traditional down low the same way before I took them out (replaced with a set of original late '70s T-tops and the sound now makes me weep).

Gball, ever had 490's. On etsg one member was inquiring why such hatred of them.

I said, well in here, one member, u, suggested many people don't know how, or don't take the chance to properly adjust theirs so they deem them junk and swap stuff.

At one point or another I have had every Gibson pickup. There's nothing wrong with 490's - in fact, I like them a lot. The problem as I see it is everyone chasing the same tired beat-to-death "PAF" sound, and they definitely are not that. But for more modern tones they kick butt to me.

Gball, I have many guitars all with different humbuckers. My SG Faded has the 490's. My 3 Knob has the HB Bill Lawrences, my Cream '76 SG has the Tarbacks, and finally my SG Classic has the Gib P90's.

My one and only LP now is my 2010 Epi Std and it currently has the T Tops and all stock wiring/pots/switch/jack which many say are junk. I'd have other LP's if cash were not a factor. In the past I really wanted a Custom Classic in Natural finish but did not have just shy of $1800-1900 at the time. My other GIB pupped guitar is my Memphis made ES135 with 57 Classics.

The last bucker guitar I bought was my $400 PRS Santana SE. No intention of swapping pups unless I did so just for the fun of seeing how some options I have on hand would sound. EMG 85 and H comes to mind, or a 498 and a Lindy Fralin Pure PAF. 9k

I'd throw real T-Tops in every guitar I own if I could afford to. Well, I guess I am close - 2 of my 3 humbucker-equipped guitars now have them and the third is the Goldie. My other guitar has P-90s so not applicable. Maybe if I can source another clean set I will drop them into the Goldtop too. Nothing sounds better than a T-Top to me.

All your T Tops Covered, uncovered or both? Any Zebra T's? Wax potted?

I pulled the covers off the stock ones in my '79 Custom to eliminate the squeal at high volume. The ones in my Traditional still have the covers, but its been only a short time since I installed them and I have only played them at "responsible" volume levels. I'll know if they are staying on when I finally get a chance to open it up.

Not aware of T-Tops ever coming with zebra bobbins or being potted. Could be wrong, but I have never had or seen a set.

Gball, Thanks for answer on the Covers. I knew my 79 was T Tops cuz I only knew this guitar without covers as I bought it WELL USED for $350 with case back around 1982. It looked like this SG practically, after but a few years usage from previous owner(s). At a mere 3 years old, because of the wear, I still can't believe it was not older like 60's or early 70's but the details like Volute, black color availability, T Tops and how the Serial was imprinted etc, tell me it was '79.

Had I not ever gone to some music stores in Towson like Gordon Miller, and another in Hillendale Shopping Center, which might have been a 2nd Bill's Music location in the 80's, I may never have seen enough of LP Customs to want one of those shiny beauties instead of my Mutt with uncovered pups ( T Tops) LP. It was missing the following parts so I added these. First things, a generic Black pick guard I bought for it and the Clear Speed Knobs, and finally Schaller Tuners. I may never have sold it had I not been smitten by a Custom. As we all know, I likely would trade all of my current guitars to get that Ebony Standard back.

I have them...they sound great with a .047uf capacitor in parallel....

Yes, most definitely. That LP is is top notch. The fit and finish is flawless and it plays great. We got some great clean and rock tones through the Mesa. And Robert brought the yellow Strat. What a great working man’s tool ! Robert did an excellent job putting that guitar together. It’s also getting some real world relicing because it’s actually being USED by a musician :dood:
