Unless the screws are all the way down and you need to go lower. Then what? Far from infinite. Off with their head!!!!!!!!!
brings me back to my previous post ----the guitar needs to be made RIGHT to start with -----if not--- then ya --- DOG EAR aint gonna cut it----

Just raise the action.
Sucks that your neck was set too shallow...
Can't blame the poor pickup on inferior build quality.:D
So the action has to suffer so that you have an archaic cover? And yes, LP neck angles are less than optimal, especially the historic ones, but easily solved with... an a adjustable pickup!! Of course, we can reconfigure the neck geometry so that you can hide the pickup under a piece of plastic screwed into a beautiful top if that is what you like.

Does the action need to be made "right" too, or is that player dependent? Oh, what is the right seat position for a car? I will tell GM. Then they can give you fixed side view mirrors so that they are perfect for people of the right height!

If they made all the mirrors semi spherical they would never need to be adjusted.
They could eliminate all those needless extra parts and increase their profit margin.

In defence of the lowly dogear.
They were conceived in a time when hollow bodies with steep neck angles ruled the earth.

Not asking anyone to reinvent the wheel, just choose the appropriate weapon for the duel.

In my opinion, if the strings can vibrate freely over the polepieces, a P90 is not too close to the strings.
They work quite well in close quarters.

LOL --- so --- to recap----RAY HATES THE Intercourse OUTTA DOG EAR PUPS---- buwahahahah

---- all dog ear loaded guitars should BURN IN HELL-----or be sent to eSGEe, and Goo ;) buwahahahah

It is enough if it just works, or even works well. It is also a question of having the ability to dial it in right for the particular player. Even if it sounds good at all heights, height still makes a difference. Why prevent someone from selecting from the best available option?

They did not switch away from dog ears because they ran out of ears, or stopped making hollow bodies. There is simply a better option!

its o.k. RVA---for many many years ---I loathed the "Jr." as week and feeble useless instrument---- then I got the Spirit...........and It was good-----and then---I got the JR.....and it was good.........now--- I JUST ORDERED A FOOKING LESTER JR 100---and it will be good

and they DIDNT switch FROM the Dog ears---you can STILL buy them---i JUST did---and the BK pup in the SG is not a VINTAGE---

---its an option--- like pink guitars ---or Big Daddys Fish thingy----

Hell Tyson tone labs MAKES one for CHARLIE STAR of Blackberry Smoke.......its a vibe---a tone---a THANG all to itself .........you must embrace it RVA--- do it --- 20.00 a month man--- you know you want to.........

Semantics my brother.
Some prefer apples, some oranges.

Variety is the spice of life.
Can't be a hater just cause something doesn’t conform to ones perceived notions.

My point again. Dog ears do NOT provide variety of tone, just design.

And --- also--- if the guitar plays and sounds right-----WHY do I need to adjust the pickup????????

If I LIKE the sounds it makes---I leave it alone---do you adjust every pickup in every guitar you play every time you play it? Do you adjsut them all to the same tone/sound frequency/height to match so they all sound the same (no) Or do you play each individual guitar for the tone IT makes ?????

The Sg Jr sounds like no other guitar on my wall---- and thats why it will stay on my wall---- the Smurf sounded too much like the Epi Lester and the Chester.....off it went.
The Jackson sounds like no other --its safe-- the Peavey SHREDATOR makes me giggle when I play it ---its safe--- The T-60 ----just amazes and astounds----safe---and so on....variety is the key

Ah, the old theory of "good enough". A recipe for success. I adjust the pickup until it is right for my expectations for that guitar. If that expectation changes within the confines of the ability of the pup to conform by changing the height, I can turn the screw. Options for optimization.

The Smurf sounded worse than the others because you accept that a guitar is capable of only one tone apparently. After all, why bother to adjust the pups, right? I would put your old Blueberry against a lot of guitars now, including your Jr and Jackson. You might be surprised.

OK. I know when to walk.
I admire your conviction, however I will always have a fond place in my heart and ears for the pure tone of an ugly, ill fitting and archaic buzzing dogear P90.

I suppose it's an acquired taste. But what a delicious taste it is.

But perhaps ----if you hand me---or Hack---or Tony that same guitar --------it would NOT be to our liking =----case in point the "smurf" was "good " to me ----but its become GREAT to you---after you totally overhauled it--

The best part of rock n roll is it doesnt HAVE to be optimized.........it just IS .....

Its not a contest.....the smurf MIGHT sound and play better....but -- if the VIBE I am going for is the one the SG JR is putting down then the Smurf --for that momenbt is NOT the right one regardless of any adjustable anything

If I want chocolate you cant turn the screw to make pistachio chocolate no matter how much you YELL at the pistachio to become chocolate

they dont have to provide variety----every pickup doesnt need to be baskin robbins 31 flavors.

Maybe I just want THAT ONE guitar to make that ONE sound I like---- thats ALL ---- it doesn't need to make EVERY sound if that was the case we would all buy 1 line 6 Variax and call it a damn day .

why is it so hard to grasp -----The JR makes the JR sound--- I like that sound--- so WTF is the problem?

Damn the OJ parole hearing didnt get this much ink hahahhahaha. You guys crack me up.Im gonna go play my Tele now hahaha,it has a real single coil in it thats adjustable :hide:
