10,000 Mile Oil Changes:

I had (3) 1969 Dodge Chargers....one was a base R/T, one a fully loaded RT/SE and the other a 1969 '500' NASCAR variant. They were cool cars.

The only thing i liked about the T/A was the rear away bar and leaf spring rates. The Challenger R/T and T/A still used the same '781' & '782' right and left torsion bars. The T/A had lighter spring rates and a heavier rear sway bar.
I liked the 340 6-pak as well as the G60 tires out back and the E60s up front. Kinda gave the car a natural rake. Also the side exit pipes. All of which didn’t make it run better or faster than an RT….. personally just really like the looks.

Edit: and oddly. I think my preference at that time was small block over big block. Don’t know why. All my car friends were about bigger better faster.

I hated the side exhaust. Inlet and outlet on same side. Always dragged over speed bumps.

I can see that. For the most part, I never had to worry about speed bumps or low clearance.

Im the only knucklehead who actually drove these daily... LOL

If i can scare up a 70 Challenger R/T, I'll drive it daily too.

Gas is stl the cheapest thing you can buy for a car... and i burn a lot of it .

You’re not alone. If I’d have had one, it would have been driven. That’s why God invented windshield wipers.

So, im nearly caught up on all my neglected maintenance. All that remains are:

1. Change ATF in manual gearbox (Ford Mercon V)
2. Change ATF in power steering (Ford Mercon V)
3. Change fuel filter (German Hengst)
4. Change synthetic 75w140 (factory specd) in posi differential
5. Engine air filter
6. New electronic blend door motor (kinda noisy)

That should bring everything current....

Don’t hate me. I’m retired. But….. I’ve gone from 250-300/week when working to…..

Changed oil in my Honda 8/16/21. I’ve added 3000 miles since.
I filled the gas tank on 8/23/22. I’ve driven about 260 miles since.

I remember when my mom and dad both retired. They told me they were worried about living on a fixed income. Worried they wouldn’t be able to make ends meet. Told me they worried needlessly. They had more money in their account after retirement than they did going to work every day. And I can sure see how that can happen. Going from filling tank every 7-10 days to I’m going on two months and still have 1/2 a tank.

Similar story. My 2010 Camaro was my DD doing 25 miles a day round trip to work (125 per week, a little over 6K per year). I took it in for its smog test a few weeks ago and I pulled out the receipt from 2 years ago. I had driven it less than 600 miles in 2 years and 130 of those miles were the round trip to the smog station in my old neighborhood (as they overlook a few after market items  ).

I’d never get by on that low a yearly mileage. While we live in the far northern burbs of Chicago…. We’re kinda in the middle of nowhere. Nearest grocery store is a 10 mile round trip. The other we use is about a 30 mile round trip. We go there as they carry a better variety. Also I have a kid that lives in Chicago. That’s over 100 miles round trip. We usually take the Civic rather than my wife’s SUV since parking a compact is way easier than parking a bus.

Well, we have 5 vehicles. The Honda Pilot gets the most use at about 3 K miles, then the Accord about the same (trips to the Bay Area at 1k each), the Jeep does less than 500 and the Vette less than 1K. So less than 8K miles total each year. We used to average about 20K miles per year when we both worked.

I cover 600 miles on a typical Sunday Drive lol

So, looking at the 75w-140 synthetic gear oils and almost none meet the Arvin-Meritor O76-E / SAE J2360 Extreme Duty 300,000 mile service intervals....only (4) companies produce a gear lubricant that exceeds these requirements.

Ford once recommended 30,000 mile diff lube change intervals, because the fluid was deemed unstable by that point. In 2000, Ford spec'd out a 75w140 synthetic gear oil with an extension on oil changes out to 50,000 miles.

One company in Houston makes a full synthetic 75w140 that exceeds the J2360 and Meritor O76-E requirements.

I've started getting very technical with lubricant ratings and maintenance intervals, especially in the differential.

Quick calls to local reps for Amsoil, RedLine, Royal Purple and Lucas all said the SAE J2360 and Meritor O76-E (which all correspond to military specifications) "are not relevant to our products."

Hmmmmm....im not surprised.

Funny, isn’t it??? Regular old Eurpean standard Fuchs SintoFluid 75w-80 meets Mil-L-2105D...so does the plain bottle of MBZ 75w-80 you can buy over the counter at your MBZ dealer.

I'll stick with the lubricants with the better ratings rather than marketing hype and unsubstantiated claims.

The manual gearbox uses Motorcraft Mercon V ATF, (synthetic blend) which is made by ConocoPhillips. On that unit, i just use the Motorcraft fluids.

If anyone knows more about this car, I'd love to hear it by the way. I am 64, never owned a Mustang...BUT they have long been a car I loved. Started when I was about 12 and I walked up my block and saw a very sparkly blue '70 Mustang Shelby. It looked like a "pearl paint", very "pearly" but I don't think that was around back then. It had a convertible top which was open , big black roll bar. It had a hood scoop, and on the side of the scoop it said "429 Cobra Jet". Years later, I was told by a Mustang guy that the motor should have been a 428, and I had a Mustang loving mechanic more recently who told me he remembers that there were Mustangs made with the 429, it may have been a special dealer thing or something or other. I don't know or care. I can still see that car sitting there back then, and will never forget it.
