I'm sorry, and I have to personally defend Satriani and Vai on these soul-less claims. Besides their displays of rapid fire pyrotechnics, when I hear these two, I hear lots of soul and emotions. There's an amazing amount of beautiful phrasing and melodies in their lead and rythym playing. I also regard both of these guys as magicians on guitar.

Not saying that's what's going on here but all too often I have noticed that when people say "he plays with soul" the "soulful" reference I get in my earholes is tired old pentatonic blues-wank.
Vai, Satriana, Petrucci, Romeo, Abasi, etc. can play with any amount of emotion needed for the song, and as evidenced above often do, but they can also play hyper-technical when need for the song as well, and I find that a very attractive combination, which is why I love listening to those guys.
