Speaking of Marshalls

Don,

FYI check your speaker output. Almost every DSL40C I encounter has the speaker output incorrectly plugged into the 8 ohm jack - should be 16 ohm...

They must of gotten their QA under control, it was set to 16. I was going to email Sweetwater and tell them they owe you a commission on this sale with all your nice product demos (y) Besides the great price what did it for me was I bought 2 JAN5751s (I haven’t seen JAN parts for decades) and I needed a place to store one. THIS is one great storage cabinet :ROFLMAO:

Much like an amp's presence controls that affects the highs after the power circuit, the resonance control affects the lows after the power circuit. A resonance control (or depth, or beef control) is a very easy and useful mod to add to an amp if it doesn't have one already.

Looked it up in Wikipedia, got it now. An RLC type circuit.

Electrical resonance occurs in an electric circuit at a particular resonant frequency when the imaginary parts of impedances or admittances of circuit elements cancel each other. In some circuits, this happens when the impedance between the input and output of the circuit is almost zero and the transfer function is close to one.

Resonant circuits exhibit ringing and can generate higher voltages and currents than are fed into them.

That's what she said...

Personally, I'm against mods such as clipping the bright cap (C-19) and other such changes.

I do like the JJ5751 in V1 and I do like my WGS Reaper 55Hz speaker.

I find the amp perfectly capable of doing anything in nearly stock form...

Robert, what’s the wattage rating of the speaker ? I only find a 30w version.

Edit - ok I found the 50w HP version, I’m guessing not the same as a 55hz one.

Congrats, Don O, on a fine amp at a very fine price.... Timing is everything!

Is it safe to assume that the DSL40 is to Marshall, like the Hot Rod Deluxe is to Fender? Each one seems to be the manufacturer's best seller and the common and affordable workhorse amp for the guitar community.

Each one of these amps also have a big social following, with endless info on mods for them. And just in case you are not aware of the popularity of the DSL40, check this following link that might keep you up at nights:
The Official Marshall DSL40c Information Thread

And this:
The dsl joey mod thread

Did you realize there are 472 pages in that DSL40 thread ? I’m up to about page 12.

This one showed up today. Just couldn’t pass up the Sweetwater close out pricing.

You get great prices over there; you're so lucky to have Sweetwater, they just seem like an excellent company, great products, top-notch support, very good prices with amazing deals from time to time. I'm happy for you fellas/ladies over that side of the pond, but slightly envious too...

Now, as this thread is growing and there's plenty of knowledge here about DSLs, I hope the OP won't mind if I prosper a couple of questions:

1) The 1 watt setting of the DSL5c is still quite loud, could I plug in say a 1 watter with a lower .1w or .5 w setting into my cab simply by taking the speaker plug and putting it in the red socket below:

There is absolutely no need to as it sounds great, but if I were to change the speaker in the vein of TTRs modification insanity then would the greenback 10" celestion ($100 or so) be the one to go for?
(Now, I know that the 2 questions don't mix well, but let's suppose I wanna play loud, take it our, sometimes, and play at low volumes sometimes...)

& does anybody know anything about this made in UK vs made in Chine 10" greenback goings on?

Sorry, Don, to hijack - thought you may be interested/know about these two things as well.

Yes.

As long as the alternate amp's speaker output is at 16 ohms. 8 ohms should be a safe mismatch.

That's a speaker that gets mostly great reviews. Many other speaker brands that offer great quality, too. I don't see how you could go wrong with that Greenback, though.

I think it's likely I'll go for that fairly soon, just because...

I've worked out how to get quite nice low night-time volumes just by using the 1w mode on the classic channel to get a bit of flavour then using the guitar volume to get the low level (the guitar level down to 7 or so keeps the nice tube feel); a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, and actually need the deep switch and tone shift off for best results.

The headphone sound is quite horrible to my ears (I'll try some different headphones tomorrow to see if I can get better results), so I'll probably plug into the Yamaha THR10 for silent playing.

Going back to the original post by, Don - what a great price (cheaper than I paid for the 5w here in Korea...), and over at the Marshall forum folks are saying they can get excellent sounds from the DSL40 at the same low volume levels of the 5w/1w combo. Don, you picked up an excellent bargain!

This old 1997 Marshall Valvestate VS265 2X12 Stereo Chorus Combo has scratchy pots and push buttons. The chorus produces a very pronounced buzz when engaged too, not to mention the ugly Red/Black Mojotone grille cloth i installed to replaced the damaged original, but the tone that comes from it is simply remarkable.

I keep telling myself I should take it to the local Marshall warranty tech ( Jack Spina Music - He's an older & experienced tech and widely regarded around here) and see if he could shape it up a little.

He's only $85.00/hour, but I wonder if this old relic is fixable???

Love stories like this one. Yours' too, Robert! I could wax happy thoughts every minute when I consider my Roland Micro Cube GT. The Twin and AC30 models are all I need to keep me quite happy and engaged. Not tube, I know, but I have my Dark Terror for that.

WGS Veteran 30 is a GREAT speaker and less than a Greenback
