NAD - OH YEAH!

To be fair, the little dimples are plain brass, so technically they are colored gold and the rest of the knob is silver :D

But I know what you mean. When I first got mine it kind of bugged me, because I had owned a Recto Solo head years ago and the knobs are much bigger and easier to see the dot on, but then I realized you shouldn't dial it in by sight just the sound because the Mesa tone stack doesn't work quite like other amps and your eyes will be telling you it's "wrong"

I understand what your saying about the eyes telling you wrong. But once it is dialed in, it would be nice to have a point of reference for the future.

Ok my first complaint. The knobs do not have colored marks of any sort. Just dimples, time to break out the Restore paint to fill them in. Damn all most a deal breaker. :pound-hand:
The paint technique might do the trick. Fingernail polish, maybe.

Here's a pic I found where someone posted some knobs he bought from Mammoth Electronics:

And if you go to Mesa Boogie's website - they have a variety, but don't publish detailed specs. These look good, too:

You might want to give The Hollywood, California Mesa Boogie store a call for their opinion. The one time I was there, I was very impressed with the few people that work there. Very helpful and honest.

Linky: Mesa Boogie Hollywood Store

I can second that recommendation. I buy all my Mesa/Boogie gear directly from the Hollywood store, and they provide literally the best service and follow up of any music retailer I have ever encountered. I don't get a chance to go up there very often but any time I am nearby I try to stop - the place is quite the candy shop for a gearhead, especially one that is into Mesa/Boogie.

Got it. I am more of a constant tweaker - I never use the same settings twice...speakers age, I grab a different guitar, amp is in a different room, etc....so I never seem happy with the same settings I left off with the last time. I wish I could find "The" tone, dial it in and rip the knobs off but it's my own little OCD thing.

Congrats CF, that is some serious hardware!!

What is particular that you like about this - the EL84 tone, vs other EL84 amps you dont?

The tone is closer to that of a 6L6, but with the response characteristics of the EL84, if that makes sense.
Other EL84 have a tone I just am not crazy about.

Randy Smith really spread some secret sauce around on the power section in these amps (and the Mark 5:25's too). If you heard this thing blindfolded there is no way you would peg it for an EL-84 powered amp, especially through a 4x12 cab. But, at the same time, as you point out, they have that "greasiness" that only '84-powered amps seem to have.

I know you (ChasFred) were planning to load the Greenback 10 into a sealed 1x10 cab, but Goldmember has a point with the V30's, specifically the Mesa/Boogie version of the V30. I use my Mini Rec primarily with one of these:

Sealed back 1x12 Recto Cab with a Mesa V-30. It's seriously a match made in heaven, gives the low end a thump that you won't get elsewhere for the size, and they are very competitively priced, especially when you compare to what other builders charge for similar quality.

Nice cab!!!!

OK as soon as my reverb rocket sells, this is what I am getting for a speaker cabinet for the Mini Rectifier . . .

Mesa Boogie Mini-Recto 1X12 Rectifier Slant Cab

Good choice. I think they designed those specifically for the Mini Rec heads. I went with the other version primarily because it is the same depth as the 4x12's so I knew what to expect from the bass.

You are going to love the Mesa version of the V-30 BTW. It's the full-kit Made In England V-30 that's done up to Mesa's liking. Easily the best speaker I have ever used for high gain.

OK I was thinking closed back cabinet, but since watching this video I am having 2ed thoughts . . .
