uhm .,.....some cards for your tire spokes.....a bottle of rot gut rum.......2 nights with Cindy Crawford (oh wait I used that coupon) ....uhm......
well ----

HOW are the 490's? --I had ZEBRAS in my SG and well they where a bit harsh to me.........how does the 490 compaire to a Zebra?
do you find them harsh?
Would they pair well with a 13lb Lester?

I have a 498T and 490R set in my Les Paul Custom.

I like them, but they do have more gain than a typical PAF clone, and they can be a bit dark.

I have 57 Classics in my 2014 SG. They are more articulate, but they also have noticeably less gain, but I have a secret weapon inbound to help with that.

Gibson makes my favorite pickups hands-down. I've tried all the biggies and a bunch of the smaller winders but they are my overall favs.

Dirty Fingers are LOUD, CLEAN pickups that are a lot more versatile than a typical "distortion" pickup, which I personally don't think they really are (if you want a balls-out distortion pickup get a 500T). They'll push the front end of an amp like a bulldozer but you can coax some pretty great mid-gain sounds out of them too. Great pickups actually. I think the name keeps a lot of people from trying them.

57's are my favorite do-anything pickup ever. They can do anything from Jazz to Metal well.

490's are very modern-sounding, also really versatile but just a bit more "generic" sounding than the 57's to my ears. The 498T though is a really great bridge pickup.

Tarbacks are getting hard to find but are awesome. They have that older Gibson pickup vibe to them.

Don't forget the various burstbuckers either. I've actually never had a set, just played a bunch of guitars with them and they generally sound really sweet.

Thanks Smitty...... interesting.....

Sure.

Sometimes, I read reviews that describe 57 Classics as muddy. I really don’t know where that description comes from. Mine are noticeably brighter (but not harsh or brittle) than some of my other pickups.

They have A2 magnets as opposed to A5 magnets, hence their weaker output. They also have symmetrically-wound coils, so they are a little smoother than some other pickups.

I think an amp under a lot of gain actually sounds pretty decent with 57 Classics. They don’t sound as gritty as some others, but the distortion is smooth and rounded.

Good characterization. That's what I love about them.
I've developed a preference for A2 magnets over the years.

Epi pups are muddy---it has EPI 57's in it now....

I dont do Metal on this guitar-----thats what SHreadators and BC RIchs and Jacksons are for. THis is my BB King-- Les Paul-- Jazz/blues/...SUnday go to meeting type guitar---

I like my 57/57+ in a LP better than I ever did in a SG.
I also like the Burstbucker Pros in my mahogany faded...enough to put another, in bridge position, in my Xaviere LP-ish shaped guitar.
Looooved the Dirty Fingers in my old friend's 84 or 85 V.

Good luck.

490R in the neck with a 57 Classic + in the bridge...that would be my number one recommendation...

However, I have installed the GFS Professional Series 2-Conductor Alnico II Humbucker (unspotted like an original PAF) 8.6K for the bridge and 7.6K for the neck, and they are a really warm, articulate pickup for the price...

I haven't installed them yet, but I have a matched pair of Burstbucker Pros. Not sure about the Alnico V configuration...I may go 57 Classic / 57 + instead.....

490R and 57 classic sound really nice, balsy in the neck of an SG, The 57 does a lot more with movement of the treble and volume knobs. I don't like the 57+ in the bridge of an SG, sounds a bit underpowered to me, and I'm not fond of the 490T either as the tone just lacks sparkle to my ears. A 498T is great in the bridge, plenty of bam, but the Gibson Angus Young which is wound between the 57+ and 498T has the musicality and chime of the 57s and the power of the 498T - my favourite Gibson bridge pickup.
