Companion Guitar in 24.75" Scale:

Don, Robert didn't dismiss my suggestions more as he knows himself and what is the norm in guitars available and I know this info based on his info he shared with us during his various builds and purchases of guitars that seemed to not suit him to a T.

Hence like he says.

I knew the above yet still suggested alternatives that were compromises between "custom" built and the type Mainstream Manufactured guitars he has either sold or returned.

I have played a LOT of PRS guitars. They are second ONLY to the Music Man in terms of popularity and frequency seen around here. I don't care for them. I don't like the headstock shape, the body styles and I am not a fan of the birds. Having said that, it's all just a matter of personal preference....

Random thoughts since April 5th, 2018:

The 2016 Studio is a nice piece. It does feel a little odd when switching from the huge double necks to the Studio's slim taper, but it's not too bad.

I could live without the coil tap feature, although some might dig it. Really kills output.

Not sure how the lacquer finish will hold up long term....looks nice though.

Setup, action and intonation are the best I've ever had on any of my four brand new Gibson guitars.

The 13.8k 498T Alnico V seems a little hot to me. Its paired with a 490R Alnico II @ 7.7k. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like it lacks character???

I'm thinking the 490R sounds good but I think Gibson Burstbucker Pros are needed.

Guitar definitely needs copper shielding.

I think a vintage cloth Tone Man harness with Sprague Orange Drops - .033uf bridge & .015uf neck - and the Norlin-era aluminum ashtray around the switch might be a vast improvement.

It all begins like this....

Hello Robert,

Good to hear from you again. Yes, that 2016 has a PC board and molex plugs. It is best to remove all that. My kits are all designed around vintage wiring, removing PC boards, cutting off plugs and having everything hard wired. The link to the kit with orange drops is listed below. I can use .033uf / .015 but with orange drops I suggest .022uf / .015uf.

When using PIO caps I dio prefer the .033/.015 combination.

I think tone caps are a bit over-rated. Most of the time I leave my tone controls on 10. Guitarists like Yngwie Malmsteen & Tony Iommi disconnect their tone control knobs for a more open sound. And to think of Eddie Van Halen's guitar with a tone knob which is really his volume...volume can have an affect on the tone of your pick ups also.

I've now used 27 harnesses from Tone Man in my Von Herndon's and I am a believer in them...and I have tested caps with a break-out harness and there are some I like better than others...

Very good points!

I use my tone controls a lot, so the caps are really important to my ear...

The cream PG, pick up rings and controls knobs look really cool and fitting...me like the look very much!

That's a file photo actually, the one I am getting has black trim rings...and it's getting a black/white/black pickguard...all these models got the Gold Top hats...

Don't forget to put a metal cover on your neck pick up like I do on my SG and good old Jimmy does on his LP's.:)
