Companion Guitar in 24.75" Scale:

Never heard extraneous taliking,,,, only intentional like Mutt Lang on Pyromania.

Haven't heard a lot of Ozzy or GNR albums since the 80's really.

All of this has me thinking......I've had great results with buying bodies from B. Hefner in Whittier and then just doing my own stuff, why not do it with a Les Paul????

Use a traditional 3 piece maple-mahogany-maple body, 12 string neck profile, one piece mahogany neck, ebony board, LPC block inlays, black polyurethane, full binding, full-size split diamond on the headstock veneer, three Thro-Bak SLE-101's, custom harness, full shielding, the whole 9 yards...

Robert, That was my first reaction when you wanted me to talk you out of buying a Gib LP.

I wondered why you didn't build one plus I wasn't sure if you really wanted an LP shape at all.

@chilipeppermaniac - I've had 4 brand new Gibson guitars and all hummed like this one. My 2003 SG Standard had wiring and it buzzed. All the others had PCB's and they buzzed too.

It's funny when a rep tells you, oh, it's a cable or your amp, etc., and you pull out a second guitar that is dead quiet on his equipment and your new Gibson buzzes like mad.

I fixed the 2016 Gibson SG, which I regret now, because it made me hate that guitar. However, with full shielding and the PCB gone it was almost - ALMOST - totally buzz free. When I got rid of the Gibson pickups, the guitar went dead quiet.

Now here's the thing. I'm big on honesty, so when I sold all my Gibson stuff - 4 sets of Gibson pickups and a complete PCB setup - I marketed them on Reverb: "Noisy take outs from a New Gibson. Noisy Gibson pickups - Brand new."

I also told the buyer this in the interest of honesty. He told me, "Oh, yeah. The Gibson stuff always buzzes like a hive of bees, but its worth it to get that Gibson tone."

So my evaluation standard is different. For most, a buzzing or squealing pickup is acceptable - look at the vintage Fender guys - and I have worked in the studio where the engineer had a guitarist with a Fender walk around until he found the quietest place to play. SCREW THAT.

I like to be able to take my hands off a guitar, to turn a piece of sheet music for example, and not hear buzzing, and not have the guitar crackle and pop as you shift it across your body.

That's my evaluation standard.

I am all for non buzzing guitars that don't buzz even while one is not holding onto something or has to have some kind of noise gate or to do shielding on a guitar that is new from a historic company factory.

I spent three days up at Mom's playing Les Pauls. I realized that the shape isn't 100% comfortable, but that I could live with it....

Ya, but I cannot get the big neck...
Ummmmmmmmmm......

You really don’t research on your own, do you?

He may have seen the specs on PRS's but since I know the specs on his VH 1275 they are even thicker than most necks known as baseball bats.

My PRS Santana 2 and 3 had WIDE FAT necks. BUT I think Robert likes em even wider and fatter.

So he picked up a slim taper Gibson? Meh....I was trying to stay out of this one...until he dismissed your logical suggestion. Since I own examples of Gibson slim, 50s rounded, baseball bat/club, and now PRS wide fat, I opened my mouth. Is the wide fat a baseball bat, or a U shape? Nope. But is it a slim, or medium? Nope. It feels a bit fuller than my 50s rounded.
Whatever...I’ll just go back to watching this devolve.

DON, I know you have personal experience with the Wide Fat PRS's
I can say that my late 90's and early 2000's Maryland made Santana 2 and 3 had necks that filled my hand out and was not cramped to make chords on the string spacing.

Having said that, I have one of my blind friend's Tele Copies he bought off a guy who sells "custom" made Tele's on ebay. Next to my 1938 Archtop with the pronounced V, these Tele necks are probably the most comfortable ones I ever played. If I got a new Tele, it would have a similar neck.

Not a problem Chili. You made a suggestion that was logical, and meant to be helpful.
That suggestion was dismissed as false.
It was not false.
I thought that was....I dunno....kinda...whatever...I’m not getting sucked in to this.

You really don’t research on your own, do you?

Yes, I do my own research, but admittedly on a limited scope. I really do value and appreciate you input as always! Maybe this will help put things in perspective and affirm my rationale for the statement, "I can't get a big neck."

Now, when it comes to "big" necks, there is all manner of subjectivity here. In the "tolerable" category, you will find the Gibson 50's profile, which I have on my 2016 SG T Series:

1-11/16" @ The Nut

.951" Thick @ 1st Fret

1.0" Thick @ 12 Fret

2.265" Wide @ 22nd Fret

.265" String-To-String-Spacing @ The Nut

I define this neck as the minimum I can "get by with" and really feel comfortable on it. My main issue with this profile is not so much the thickness but the string spacing.

Consider this:

I can cover a nickel with the tip of my middle finger. So, I find myself frequently muting-out some of my open chords with the nail of the adjacent finger.

Now, I define an "ideal neck" as the ones I designed and had built for my Von Herndon Double Neck:

1.900" @ The Nut

1.125" Thick @ 1st Fret

1.125" Thick @ 12 Fret

2.320" Wide @ 20th Fret

.325" String-To-String Spacing @ The Nut

So, that's the logic behind my search for a neck that no one offers as a regular production line item...which simply has to be custom made.

You illustrate a very valid point. There are quite a number of different profiles.

Mark, my friend, I think you are the only one who "gets" me...

Don, Robert didn't dismiss my suggestions more as he knows himself and what is the norm in guitars available and I know this info based on his info he shared with us during his various builds and purchases of guitars that seemed to not suit him to a T.

Hence like he says.

I knew the above yet still suggested alternatives that were compromises between "custom" built and the type Mainstream Manufactured guitars he has either sold or returned.

I saw an article on the 2016 Studio T that described it as having "the neck of the traditional 50's Les Paul." That got me interested because my 2016 Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute had the .951" neck, but that description wasn't accurate.

It's not a big deal really either way. I do a lot of experimenting. Shoot, Man, I designed a guitar headstock and produced 27 guitars under the Von Herndon name just for fun.

I've already been offered $1,000 for the Studio with the Gibson Pink Fur Case, so it's all good!!!!
