Meeting of the Mindless - Mid-Atlantic Edition

Ok, so here's a pic Chili sent me.

This is the amp we played through.

Yes. It was good!

That little Starcaster guitar is special, too. I has a fully-loaded pickguard that @Robert Herndon sent to him.

That guitar sounded pretty nice!

I'll also add that the amp was non-functional at one point, but due to the assistance Chili received from @DonP and @ivan H , he was able to fix it. He expressed a lot of appreciation for all the help he received from them.

I recognize that pickguard!!!! :-)

It's kinda low on the guitar priority list right now, though I reserve the right to be fickle and put it at the top of the list at any moment!

But, I am thinking seriously about it.

I'm thinking through the various switching schemes and how I could use push-pull pots to expand the options.

All kidding about non-adjustable dog-ears aside, they would be a better choice as they would require less invasive routing on the body.

Hey, I just realized, if I did this, I could join the P-90 Club and Hackmaster's Three-Pickup Club all at the same time! Maybe I should really do this 'cuz I wanna be cool and I want the other kids to like me!

What did you think of those 8.6kΩ Pickups???

I thought, “These sound exactly like 8.6 KOhm pickups!”

Seriously, I played it clean and with a little crunch. I thought they sounded nice both ways. They handled drive well without getting muddied.

LOL!!!

Yeah, they were a tone experiment...I bet the crunch on that amp is phenomenal!!!!

To be honest, that head seems like it’ll get insanely loud! At only around 9:00 on the dial, the stuff on Chilipeppermanic’s walls was shaking and rattling! So, we never got the amp to it’s full crunch-tasticness.

That pretty much left no choice but to run it at a tamer volume and use pedals for crunch.

Even so, the sound from the head and the 4x12 cab was really rich and made everything sound good.

My Strat has never sounded as good; the excess brightness on my ‘57 Classics was gone and I had a thicker tone, though still with presence.

It was a revealing experience.

Awesome!

Those pickups had a bit of punch as I recall....

"Excess Brightness..." Oh yes!!!

I am so pleased with the combination of my Thro-Bak's and the Reaper 55Hz. I am actually rolling off bass/presence because I now have so much in abundance. With previous setups, I had to boost bass/mid to get the fullness I wanted. The unpotted Thro-Bak SLE-101's are just incredible...

Yes. Maybe the volume was closer to 9:30 - 10:00 to get the walls and windows rattling, but it is a non-master volume amp, so getting the crunch from the power section would have resulted in police-response volume!

I was also intrigued to observe that it has a native spaciousness to its sound. I had a reverb pedal going into it and had to back off the reverb decay and mix, as I just didn’t need as much with that amp.

Actually I also gave smitty a taste of each channel on the high side. Channel 1 high can barely go past 2 before is gets really loud, and a GOOD BIT TREBLY. Channel 2 is nice and full sounding and for kicks, I jumpered high 1 and Low 2 and plugged him in high 2 and adjusted the volumes to about 1 on the bright channel and like smitty said, 9-10 AM on the channel 2.
Having a volume pedal and other tools at his disposal on the pedal board was a really nice treat for me as well.

Like smitty said, it has a lot of balls to drive speakers. As I told him, the previous owner tells me it was such a clean amp, he had trouble getting breakup out of it even with 4x12 Greenback 25 watt Celestions in the 100 watt 1960A cab he and I used to have.

I miss my SLP's...except for the weight and lack of on-board reverb....

WTF????

Hell, my problem was getting a CLEAN tone from my SLP's!!!!!

Ha! Well, Chili's JMP is pretty clean...at least where we were able to play it. But, it was still a full sound.

Oh, Dude!
YES! That's a great term - "Full Sound." That's what I found in the Reaper 55Hz. Single string notes sound like chords!!!!
