What is your go-to guitar

My Les Paul.

Why? First and foremost, the tone. Nothing sounds like a Les Paul, not even things that are really close like a PRS Singlecut. There is magic in that tone that only comes from a LP.
Then, they just feel like home to me - I have been playing Les Pauls for 40 years now and the feel of one is so natural that it's almost as if it isn't even there. Any other guitar takes me a few minutes to get used to when I first strap it on.

Looking back at this I am struck by something. My answer to the question is still "My Les Paul" but now it's a different Les Paul - I am literally obsessed with my '79 Custom, which I did not own at the time I originally answered this. I am so blown away by the thing that my other guitars seem like afterthoughts. My bandmate told me over the weekend that he thinks it's made me a better player, and he's probably right. What an amazing instrument.

Some guitars become rather comfortable extensions of ourselves, and I think they make us better players....Agreed.

I found out that Epiphones in the upper level are great guitars. If it's a special of any sort it is bound to be bad for you. A Buick special to a special on river fish. Got it now? Go with stuff you have some clue about. Naw not the copy Les Paul jive crap monkey woman the cool stuff. Casino and that other John Lennon creepy stuff. Buy those turnes and film them. Then go see the stuff made in this homo land. San Diego California pooped out that Doors freak and Rickenbacker over priced by $1500 per dog bite and let my weird pal Gary the needle find a home there. Now what was I thinking about. Oh yes I have to post two articles by Friday AM so sail about the waves to the left and go away please.

You are onto something. I have found that the "comfort factor" of a given guitar has a lot to do with proficiency.

I know that my double neck is nothing special, but in the spirit of this thread, I have to say that the sheer comfort factor of the 1-3/4" x 1.120" necks, the tonal qualities, the overall feel, the fact that I am not self conscious about how small it looks on me, just impart such joy into playing it that I get lost in it...

This is the first guitar I have ever owned that somehow transports me to this magical place where I just totally zone out.

Yes, I can hear a light buzz from the retaining wire on the bridge, but for the first time in my musical life, I really don't care.

The action, intonation and neck adjustment were the best I've ever encountered, so rather than have to shield, rewire, modify, all I've had to do was play it.

When we came up here, we were loaded so heavy with gifts that I couldn't bring it....its the first guitar I have truly missed. Crazy as it may sound, its as if it has a soul or a spirit....it has something that transcends the "relationship" I have had with every other guitar.

I think all those things...the absence of worry over seemingly infinitesimal details, imparts a certain musical freedom that allows a level of creativity that just doesn't happen very often...

Am I alone in this???

No your not. My no worry and very much loved guitar is my Peavey. It's is worth a lot to me as far as confort goes. I have fun with it so great memories are hung on it. I dragged a junk speaker cab to the woods by my house and run a line to a amp head then blast the children of the night with gloom music. I always played the Peavey because it was safe. The cops would just warm me or sit in their radio car and wait for a call about the noise. Some nights no one complained and I could play a long time. I did not worry about it laying on the ground or one of the cops coming over and playing it. A very you are welcome guitar, it's earth finish is warm and always fits those warm fall nights. No Robert you have company maybe not for the same exact reason but close enough.

And that is a comfort. Nothing is more lonely than being crazy all by yourself.... :)
