Another AXL LP type Husk build.

Got the fret I was short today; window of time was at hand, progress:

Frets in.

Sorry for the blurry pics. I hold this thin strip of wood to avoid marring the body while filing.
I still managed to gash the treble side of the headstock working from the other end on a back stroke though.

Filed flush and beveled.
Came out really well and I made much better time on this second rodeo.
Hopefully I'll have time to dress them tomorrow.
I did have the file skip out once and scrape across the upper frets, but nothing bad that the leveling wont take care of.
Very nice! What did you use to cut the angle at the fret ends?

knocked the finish down with 4-0 steel wool, clean off and wipe down with tack cloth, 1st coat of wipe on satin poly.
There are several spots where the stain is uneven. It looks to me they tried to fill some small dings and the filler that remained in the wood pores took the stain differently than the rest.
This was a finish flaws B-stock. I didnt want another wood refinishing project and am fine with the imperfections.
Sorry the pics are my usual not so good.

Nice!

i freehand file the ends flush then the bevels with a plain old 10" combo mill / rasp file, obviously using the mill side.
I dont plan on doing a ton of these so have not felt the need for the bevel file.

I dont have a pic but I strung it up as an acoustic of sorts with no electronics and an old nut shimmed to "close enough" for now.
The neck, action, fretboard, etc are all feeling good.
That once frozen truss rod is smooth and functional and the neck responds as it should.

A little more progress yesterday, not much time.
No pics,

The hardest thing for me on these builds has been positioning the pickup mounting rings straight / square / in line.

Finished except, I sanded the nut way too low, and I know better that it will pull down under string tension, but was in a hurry.
I have a LOT of hum that mostly quiets when I touch the strings.
I accept this as somewhat normal on other guitars but this is too much hum.
I metered all my grounded spots back to the jack ground and all are just a few ohms.

I wonder if it is a ground loop instead of a bad solder joint. They look good but I'll re flow them when time allows.

other than that it plays very well, very happy with the way it turned out.
I forgot to tie the 2 pairs of controls grounds together so now there is a ground between the 2 tone pots.

Looks really nice,so whats the wire that looks like its not conected ? well it looks like grounding wire you used .

Right you are!
I bought the pairs made up already cheaper than i could buy the parts.
Those bare wires to the left of each pair are grounds soldered to the sides of the pots.
I tried it on the 18w TMB and it is not nearly as noisy as on the 5e3 Tweed Deluxe.

Very nice!! I was going to compliment your soldering before I read the last post. You say you metered the grounds so I guess they are OK (even though I do not know how that works) but the side grounds are suspect to me.

In any event, I had the same issue. As a result, I went back and sheilded the cavity, which helped. Then I upgraded the cheap output jack I had originally used and that helped a some more. It is nearly hum free now.

Congrats on a great ax and a fine job. Can you post a sound sample after you get the nut set right?

I have the nut shimmed but the bottom edge on the bass side is almost out of the nut slot.
Still scratching my bald head over how I went so far past the target.
I ordered a replacement.
so, I have been playing it and liking it.

I never got going on gear or learning recording, so I dont have a way to post a decent audio quality file.
I may try the cell phone thing, but a disclaimer: I really lack playing skill, talent and ability.

I a/b it for noise with another humbucker guitar last night on both the 5e3 and 18w builds, its a little noisier, not much.
I have been playing louder and with a RAT, etc. so there is more noise all around, pun intended.
Flourescent lighting is right above me. I take few steps away it is a good bit less.

probably gonna order the shielding paint Adrian posted from GFS.
