Another AXL LP type Husk build.

Same origin as RVA's beauty he has in progress.
Mine will be more the beast so to speak appearance wise anyway.

I'll not sand, nor sweat, nor poly spray,
I'll build on whats there and soon play,
To most, at much dismay....

So, now I got the truss rod turning and verified the neck responds.
i chamfered the fret slots slightly and have some binding glue in the slots to pick out first.

Bad,poorly lit photos, like Bigfoot (is it real or a hoax?)

You got a nice canvas to work on. Although you will do less work, it needs less work

This husk talk always reminds me of when the cowardly lion grows his set of balls in "Courage"

"What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist or the dusky dusk?
What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage."

What makes the guitar nerd craft his husk?
I dont know but for me its more crazy than courage.
Like riding down the apt. staircase on a plastic suitcase as a kid.

I ran short of time, as usual, but realized I have 22 fret slots and only 21 frets...
I emailed Dave at Ubuyguitars, asked him to mail me one.
He responded right away, said he would.
Damn nice guy to deal with.
My order got royally screwed up but we worked through it.

I'm busy this weekend with mom's estate sale so I wont have much time to work on it.
I plan to knock down the finish with some 0000 steel wool and start putting coats of the rub on poly, as time allows.

knocked the finish down with 4-0 steel wool, clean off and wipe down with tack cloth, 1st coat of wipe on satin poly.
There are several spots where the stain is uneven. It looks to me they tried to fill some small dings and the filler that remained in the wood pores took the stain differently than the rest.
This was a finish flaws B-stock. I didnt want another wood refinishing project and am fine with the imperfections.
Sorry the pics are my usual not so good.

That guitar does not need a refinish. Frank was just telling me about wipe on poly. It is certainly easier than the spray and probably cheaper. How do you like working with it?

Very easy too work with.
It is pretty thin so the coats level off and dont leave any wipe marks, as long as you wipe it on pretty wet and dont go back over it.
it starts to set up pretty quickly, depending on temp and humidity of course.
I did 2 coats yesterday a few hours apart.
Looks great.
I may final rub it with the steel wool again for a flat finish, or leave the satin.
Not sure yet.

If you want a thick build up layer it would take a lot of coats.
I used this on a bay window project and some other things.

I cut this opening from my living room to kitchen in 1997 or '98, I think we did 3 coats on the trim and probably 6 or 8 on the sill.
It has held up very well.

Between coats I ball up the rag and pull the plastic glove over it and put it in another bag to keep it from drying out until done.

Progress from my Labor Day Monday:

upload_2017-9-5_10-27-23.jpeg

The puddle of water in front of and under my fridge had other plans.
Something seemingly simple always turns into more time, especially with 45 yr old plumbing.
The ice maker line split. Plus managing the existing / escaping water in the pipes, wet under the layer of loose-lay vinyl flooring, etc.
I replaced the whole thing easy enough; not a big deal but the floor was wet underneath and I damaged the floor moving the fridge around.

Not a good day.
I came really close to totally losing my poop when I ripped the vinyl floor.

Its old but we try to stay above ghetto chic.

On a good note, RVA has offer to send me a couple of HB height screws and strap button I am short!

Got the fret I was short today; window of time was at hand, progress:

Frets in.

Sorry for the blurry pics. I hold this thin strip of wood to avoid marring the body while filing.
I still managed to gash the treble side of the headstock working from the other end on a back stroke though.

Filed flush and beveled.
Came out really well and I made much better time on this second rodeo.
Hopefully I'll have time to dress them tomorrow.
I did have the file skip out once and scrape across the upper frets, but nothing bad that the leveling wont take care of.

Thanks guys.

Special shout out to RVA Ray; I received the parts you sent me today.
I just checked the fitment of the pickup screws and they fit!!

Ray and I have a bit in common with these husk builds, and I was short some parts.

I used the height screws from the Giovanni GVH-1 set I had on hand for the first husk, the AXL Jr.
I bought a used set of Agile 3000 series pickups over at AGF, but without screws or springs, and used the bridge in it.

The other screws I had did not fit and Ray was gracious enough to send me a couple of screws and a pair of strap buttons.
Thanks again, it is truly appreciated.
