What Amp are you playing today?

Made some minor tube changes in the Peavey. Added a couple Shuguang 12AX7's. I think peeps that said Shoogs do well in a 5150/6505 did it and found what I have. Yes, that's what I wanted. Also the 6505 1992 is now mated to an EVH 5153 412 blowing hard with Heritage 65's.

I got 2 100 watt Pre-rola Weber Gray Wolf speakers loaded in the EVH 212 cab. So Its crowned with my sleeper 5150, the EVH Iconic. Now this amp sounds good at low to medium volume levels. I tune mine just on the Green OD channel. I turn the amps boost feature on but have the POT set at zero. At zero it boosts around 8 to 10dbs. I found this out from James Brown the designer. He mentions it in interviews as well as forum posts. It fills the Green crunch in a way I like.

When the EVH 5150 Iconic(80 watter)hits 10:30am on the volume pot, it morphs into another gear. My 2203x's cousin. Very Marshall like. Just under noon It opens up huge. The 212 with the Webers hits sooo F'n hard. If you haven't gone to that volume point with this amp, your experience is prolly going to be its an ok 5150. Sounds alright. The power section in the 80 watter sits this amp right with the 2203x & 6505 1992. Both these boxes are north of 100 watts.

Today I've been bitch slapped & ball clapped by all 3 of these amps. Now I don't hear the train going by a block away anymore. That can't be good right?

I put a Creamback 65 back in my 112 cab and swapped the power tubes in my Origin from KT66s back to 6550s...just for a change. I think maybe...maybe...the P90s like it better this way, at least for now anyway.

I'm not really a 'high gain' kinda person myself, to me a stock 2203 has enough gain on tap generally. Curious, how would you say the Fireball and the 6505 compare? Two flavors of the same thing, significant difference(s)? I'm still keeping my eyes open for a SLO someday and some people say the 6505 is "the poor man's SLO"... which could make one an attractive alternative, I guess... :)

The Fireball is 100 percent balls out metal, 6L6 tubes hit very hard. It has a mean voicing that Metal players really like. It only does one thing very well. It does have crystal-chimey cleans but I don't use it for that. It's not a Marshall crunch. Very high gain tones.

The 6505 is much more usable for you non knuckle draggers.
Cleans are nice, lots of oomph but also very articulate and very tight. Very Strong mids. It's a metal players dream, but also can be useful in any genre. Some of them can be hissy of the gain is way up. Gains from low to crushing. (Also comes in a mini head that lacks only the big low end punch if the big ones)

I've played a few SLO (and clone circuits) amps before, I found them to sound nice, with good rock tone, but they are pretty sluggish to me. I'd take a 5150/6505 any day over the SLO. They have more scoopy mids. Moderate gain levels

Just my 2 cents.

Gotcha, OK. I think I might see if I can find one cheap to give a bit of a bash. Thanks, appreciated. :yesway:

The full sized ones are still a lot, but the mh you can find on Facebook for like 4 bills.

Yeah, I don't do FB plus I'm in Europe so prices are probably a little higher as they're less common here. I generally try to snag stuff like that which is in need of service/repair. At a quick glance I can get an 80W 5150 head for 800 (Euros) new and a used combo for about 500, plus some 15W ones cheaper, but I'd be looking at the larger fixed bias models.

A 6505 goes for about 1K used, the only SLO's to be found 2nd hand are the mini's, which... yeah.
