Is there a time limit on the ability to edit your own posts?

Ok, so far that's:

• All participants in a PM can edit each other's posts (unacceptable across the web, and could possibly become a liability issue).
• Signatures limited to 4 lines with a character limit too low to list all of my gear.
• Online status switch doesn't work (see image below).
• Family friendly language on a website comprised mostly of older men.
• Must remain a "well-known member" until 1,000 posts (there's no reason for this).
• Post-edit time limit: you cannot correct or update your posts after 7 days (unacceptable).

My online status is unchecked, yet I'm still shown as online:

I don't see a problem here. You're not limited in the sense that you cannot post links, start DM's or anything else - you merely get a 'badge' after 1K posts.

I would like to add one bullet point to that list, though, and that's that 50MB of storage for images per user is really not a lot today. I've exhausted it, and I'm not using hi-res pics or any of that.

Concur on the editing, I don't really see why there's a max of 7 days on it, but it doesn't bother me either, honestly.

I'll also, if I may, add a question; how do you get the geo IP lookup flag to dislay under your avatar? I see some members have this, some do not. I presume there was a setting which is now obscured.

Line 1: Yes, but there's no point in making someone wait to join in the same 'fun' as everyone else.

Line 2: Since this site is privately owned and run by donations, server space must be more limited. You could have more space, but you'll need to see ads and give membership contributions so more space can be added.

Incidentally, can you delete your images after you upload them, or are they considered the property of the site owner? If so, that's another bullet point for me. Moreover, not allowing users to delete their images, theoretically guarantees that server storage space can be maxed over time.

Line 3: "Security reasons" is the usual claim, but I've never seen a forum get sued for not putting a clamp on this issue. It could be control panel default that the owner never changed.

Line 4: I'm not sure. Again, a control panel setting, I imagine.

Disk is cheap, hehe. Given the relatively sparse usage of the native albums, most of the image payload ends up in the database likely as blobs. I'm more than willing to chip in to get a little more. :yesway:

I think there's more to it than just slapping in an extra drive. I don't remember how it works, but I'm pretty sure the database gets bogged down, and that's why forums start running slow, crashing, etc.

I'd wager the database backing the forum is a few GB likely whereas the on disk size of the image storage is ~250MB. I have ZIP disks that hold 3x that... :coffee2:

I haven't heard that word since they came out with Wi-Fi (which my wife calls "wiffy". She says, "hey my wiffy's not working, you fix it for me?". And I'm like:

At one point there was a flood of complaints about the size of signatures. A number of members found larger signatures, with lots of stuff in them, distracting when just trying to sift through content. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t sorta thing.

The PM edit thing is something that had, until recently, been unknown…you guys were the first to point it out.
The online status has always been broken…since ever afaik.

I have brought this thread to the attention of admin, as there are several points do need to be addressed.

Yes and no, there are two flags for some members; one is their selected country flag, the other appears to be based on a geo IP lookup of their IP. I've selected the English flag (I'm English), yet my geo IP flag would be Dutch as I live in the Netherlands. I'm not bothered by this, but I was intrigued.

What's a ZIP disk? :ROFLMAO:

I'll be 61 this fall. Been in IT since 1999.

You may have JUST missed the ZIP disk, indeed. I actually have the Firewire version of that drive pictured (there was also a USB version). The 100MB and 250MB disks were more common, by the time the 750 came out the technology was dying. Those 100MB ones were used by some pro/semi-pro gear; samplers, synths, that sort of stuff.

You're reading me wrong. When I said I haven't heard of ZIP's since 2003, I mean that we quit using ZIP's and moved to CD's. By then, ZIP's were out.

I was there after 5" floppies, and entered IT when 3.5" was king. I was there when old school law offices and smaller office businesses were using desktop computers as servers, maxed out with 512kb drives, requiring several of them to store all of their company's records.

One of my first jobs in IT was helpdesk support for... both ZIP and Jazz drives (Iomega) and CD/DVD burners (Plextor), along with a bunch of other brands/products. True, I don't think I had more than a couple of calls for ZIPs and those customers were almost embarrassed to ask anything. I never encountered a 5.25" floppy professionaly, though I had them myself.

-I don't believe this is true. If you quote someone in your post, you can edit the quote. However I will double check this just in case I am in error on this. This might be a default setting in the Xenforo software.

• Signatures limited to 4 lines with a character limit too low to list all of my gear.
-I placed this limit because some members were abusing this and had signature files 1/2 a page long. You might try making a page with all your gear or making a gallery with all your gear and linking that page in your signature file.

• Online status switch doesn't work (see image below).
-I'll check into this. I would think that if you wanted everyone to see your gear collection on everyone of your posts, you would not have a reason to hide on a public forum?
Do you have a problem with people seeing your online status?

• Family friendly language on a website comprised mostly of older men.
- "Mostly" is the operative word here! We DO have FEMALE members here also. I have a plethora of grandchildren even greatgrandchildren that visit us my wife and myself on a regular basis. If you have a problem with not being able to post porn here, there are plenty of other sites on the web that you can go there and post. Although we do have MOSTLY older MEN posting here, WE ENCOURAGE the younger generation to take an interest in music. So yes this is a FAMILY FRIENDLY website. If you do not find this to your liking, perhaps this is not the site for you?

• Must remain a "well-known member" until 1,000 posts (there's no reason for this).
- Well actually there IS a reason for this. We have a reward system for members that make regular contributions and this limit is set to 1,000 posts before your gain the title of Ambassador where the membership here suggests a title for the ambassadorship.

• Post-edit time limit: you cannot correct or update your posts after 7 days (unacceptable).
- In the past, some members have made statements or insults to other members and after being called out on it, they have edited their post then denied ever posting it. I believe that 1 week is enough time to make spelling corrections or recant your statement made in haste. Myself and the moderators here find this totally acceptable.

If you do not find these rules to be acceptable to you, perhaps there are other forums you can tell the owner what rules they should make. You are welcome to remain a member here. Unlike some other forums, I will not ban you for stating your opinions or making suggestions. However I reserve the right to implement the rules that I see fit.

Tech issue: I agree. One shouldn't be able to edit someone else's post
• Online status switch doesn't work (see image below).
(tech issue)

Also tech issue, but I guess I personally don't have an issue. If you haven't caught a grammar or spelling error or maybe changed you mind on wording in 7 days.... it is what it is.

I'm an old man. I like this plan. This forum was formed on the premise of "family friendly" and the majority here seem to prefer it that way.
• Must remain a "well-known member" until 1,000 posts (there's no reason for this).
Becoming an "ambassador" is just something fun that was invented here. Technically it means nothing. Something fun to do. The masses get to suggest an Ambassador Name. Usually something silly. Case in point. Mine.. A mash up of Ferris Bueller and Iron Butterfly. Jokes about cleaning the lounge bathroom are made. Refilling the lounge fridge with adult beverage. That sort of stuff. Yes, there is an Ambassador Lounge area you can't access until after 1000 posts. Guess what. Practically no "Ambassador" goes there to post. Fact is.... the last Thread started there in a very long time was "Sure is quiet Here."

This does need fixing; I've confirmed the issue. I'm sure you will, too.

Ha, I didn't know that's how it works... So do you get to decide it yourself, ultimately, or is it decided for you? Just curious. :)
