LP Tribute refinish, take 2...

I like it, man!
Be nice to see more grain but it's a unique finish. Black hardware, done.

I'm convinced the grain isn't going to show no matter what I do, It didn't show in the original finish from Gibson, and it didn't really show much even when I just clear coated it natural.

I have a couple of ideas brewing in my brain about how to fix the couple of issues I have with where it is right now. I like the color and I like the rough look, but there are a couple of areas that need some attention.

I'll be living up to my ambassador name again, this is going to be a "hold my beer!" kind of thing, lol. If it works I win, if not I can always sand it down and start over.

It looks great Steve. I actually liked the original finish. But being the perfectionist that you are, I respect that.
What bugged me most about it is the black around the edges wasn't even. It stuck out like a sore thumb every time I looked at it and I just woke up one Saturday morning and said it's got to go and before I gave it a second thought I had sanded the whole top down. Take a close look at that pic again and you can see what I'm talking about, it was worse in real life.

I've been busy this evening making a mess. I got the stain on, it's not exactly what I was going for, but I think it's going to be better than it was. I started with yellow and then added brown araound the edges and worked my way in trying to get a burst, the yellow seems to have washed out, but it might come back some with the oil, I don't know. The binding came out better, but it's rough. This is after stain and dry. I'm afraid if I keep messing with it I'm going to f'k it up...

Ah dude. A burst can be so difficult.
I’m working on this ol’ Silvertone. My preference is to keep the dark shade off the ached portion. But that’s just me. This is my first attempt at a burst. And my first attempt at French Polishing. I’m going for the original Iced Tea burst. Gonna need to sand back the blotchy spots. And try again. IMG_0578.jpeg
Here it is under bright white LED.

I feel your pain.

And then as we know, wood is wood. It does what it wants. We can’t always control how it takes the color. If you look close at the above pic you can see two streaks on the lower right hand bout. Every time I sanded back these would not go away.

This is my first attempt at a burst also and you're right. It's very difficult to do by hand. I have never had such a hard time with a piece of wood, the top on this thing is so weird. But, I have learned something each time I've done a finish on this one. I definitely used too much yellow to start with, or maybe I should have sanded it back before I started the brown, I don't know.

I have a feeling I'm going to be giving this one more try, but if I do I'm not going to attempt a burst.

What are you using for stain on that?

I'm going to give myself one more chance to get it right before I commit to a solid color, I can't let it win. I'm going to take all I've learned and do it again, but I'm not sanding by hand this time, I've done that 5 times now and it sucks. I just ordered one of these, it'll be here Tuesday and that should give the finish enough time to dry so I can sand it off.

Be careful with that orbital…they can really make some quick work of it. Easy to get carried away.

I swear by my orbital sander. I'm sure your aware, but I'll state it anyway.
Yours has variable speeds. A speed in the middle works well.
Stay off the edges. Do these by hand.
Many shops stop at 320grit. I still see swirls after 320. I go to 500-600grit. Once your done with 320, 500-600 grit goes pretty fast.
