LP Tribute refinish, take 2...

I did a quick mock up to get a visual with both nickle or black hardware. I think the black looks better, but I'll need to find a better bridge than this tone sucker...

I haven't done anything else today. I've been staring at it all day trying to figure out what to do because I'm not happy with it as is. I've been looking at pics all day and I've seen some good examples of what's going on with the stain not going on evenly. Seems to be common on some Gibsons, but they kind of hide it and I see it now. I was on the right track, but I started the tru-oil before I figured it out and it's too late now. I know what to do, but it involves sanding it back down and starting over....again. :ROFLMAO:

Here's a good example of what I'm talking about with the stain being blotchy like mine is doing...

I feel your pain. I totally understand blotchy. This is only a desk top. Oak, I think. But whatever the wood, this would not take the stain evenly. Sanded for two days. Went through 15 pads of 60grit. Applied sealer (conditioner,) light coats of brown stain. Turned blotchy AF. Just like that dark burst above. Sanded back and applied 1light coat of Minwax Golden Oak. I’ll take it. 2nd coat of poly goes on today. Sometime the wood just doesn’t cooperate.

That’s a function of the grain. Was this guitar a Gold Top, did you say?

No it was originally just...ugly. I sanded this finish off 10 or so years ago and tried to do then what I tried to do now. I thought now that I've got a few finishes under my belt I'd try it again thinking I did something wrong last time, but it ended up doing the same as before.

Here's the original finish.
