Noise Gate Signal Path - How do you run yours?

I run 2204 & SL 100 wide open into 4x12. My noise gate is the volume knob on my guitar. Nothing like a firing breathing power house behind me with angry hiss that tells me,,yep i got you..lets go..

My observation, anything a gate does is not worth any sacrifice of the EQ & dynamics that are available without it.

100%

Gates = no bueno. Tone/dynamics suck devices. Just learn to control things with the knobs and stompboxes

Depends I guess on amp amd style?
The 5153 for example, or JVM410 on channel 4 are high gain hiss machines. Some stages have hummy power too. Gate is essential for me.
My dynamics are minimal. :p

The beauty of a 4-jack gate is, it's triggered directly by guitar signal. Brilliant idea. But more than I need.
My own setup's pretty straightforward; I run a Decimator X after analog drives etc, but before the volume pedal & digitals.
That's for both the big board and the small one.
With my reunion tour rig, the Carl Martin analog section is quiet enough that I don't need a gate.

That's exactly my feelings based on my limited experience with a noise gate, and the very reason why my experience is limited. :yesway:

I accidentally found some info.
Here's a simplified diagram of the "X" pattern for 4CM on the Boss.
I have 3 boards set up like this now.

Boss says only a tuner between the guitar & gate input.
(I've had a wah out front of the gate that worked fine like that)
Drive pedals between the gate Send and amp input.

Noisy loop pedals, like EQ & modulation go between the amp FX send and the gate Return.
TBE, like reverb & delay go after the gate Output and then to the amp FX return.

If you think you don't have noisy pedals, give this a try and you'll wonder if your amp needs a cap job to quiet down the transformer hum.
Because that's all you'll hear.

I have to say…I have the Sentry…that gate is frikken crazy cool. I have been able to dial it in satisfactorily with just the knobs. Knowing that there is a more detailed control set available via USB is comforting, but…after decades of Boss NS-2 use…the Sentry nails it. The key is control of hysteresis(something I learned about while editing/gating drums)…the fade between close and open of the gate, essentially. That is what gives it a natural feel. Muting with fingers, palm, or whatever can act as intended via a good hysteresis setting. The Sentry has a setting, via USB, that can adjust this via frequency…if I read the manual correctly. Whatever…the default settings allow for some really cool settings from the knobs by default.

That is good info TBD. I am just starting to understand the noise gate. I have used reapers noise gate and if I quite the hum playback is also silent but just turn off the plugin to hear it.

Yeah, once you get a good grip on it…it falls into place. Most of the guitar pedals do a pretty good job of cutting at a threshold… but many miss the mark on gentle fades and natural feeling transients. The Sentry allows fine tuning in this grey area that, it seems, many others do not. Some handle it well by default (Decimator), but some don’t (IMO EH Silencer etc).
The NS-2 does alright too, but could be more gentle with the closure and opening…more the closure(IMO/E).
