Computer woes...

If I recall correctly, S mode only allows app from the Microsoft store.
Firefox is there, along with Duck Duck Go...

Correct, but it still wouldn't let me load Firefox or DDG. As soon as I took it out of S mode I could download them no problem. Now all the clitchiness is gone that I was dealing with before. Everything is running smoother now.

And that’s all that matters. Glad you got it fixed.

The last time i had to use WIN$$ was some XP at work. I never liked that annoyance. I'm using linux for decades, and in earlier times even owned some unix workstations.

can you imagine a recent windows on a machine from 2009? I'm using such an old notebook für recording in our rehersal room. It runs Ardour 8.x on a freshly upgraded Alpine linux. Surprisingly nice.

I have built some redhat servers and I do indeed like Linux. Unfortunately I work in a win 11 environment now. In the previous century at EarthLink ISP it was Sun OS on Unix servers. Those were the days.

A friend of mine on another forum is trying to talk me into trying Linux, but I'm scared of changing to something I know nothing about. I don't know anyone in "real life" that uses it that could let me see what it is first hand. He got me to thinking about it, though.

Winter is coming , will use that time to install Linux on one of my 2 unupgradable to Win 11 pc’s, just for fun.
Might also try to make a NAS, network attached server with a raspberry pi

I’ve actually considered the same with my old laptop that can’t be upgraded to 11.

I bought a new PC with 11 , for games, haven’t found a new one yet, installed libre office and thunderbird instead of Miscrosoft Office and outlook, both work well, , so the Linux downstairs would be in my man cave watching tutorials to play guitar, etc

I have my cheap laptop I could try it on. One question I have is, is it reversible if I don't like it?

I might have saved a link somewhere on my pc, I am on my iPad and too lazy to go look up, maybe tomorrow, but you can download some recovery disk or win 10 install, which you put on a usb disk. Just went and check, a recovery USB windows 10 disk, I think you can download it at Microsoft . So yes it’s reversible. One thing, is it will wipe your drive. What I have been doing after working corporate where everything was saved everyday on a server, nothing was saved on our hard drive is when I get a new pc is I split the C: drive in 2, make a D: drive and have all me data on that so, in case of virus or whatever I can reinstall windows without losing my data.you can still do it if you have a lot of space, split the drive, move your data to D drive, install Linux on C, or obviously back everything up on external drive, I back up,on 2 external drives.
You can also make it dual boot, win or Linux, not sure how computer savvy you are, here I am telling you all this, and I haven’t tried it yet, but I am looking into it.
