Computer woes...

So the other day I updated the drivers on my HP laptop and it killed my audio driver so now I have no sound for listening to music and vids. I'll get back to that later.

Here's what I'm concerned with right now...

I have another (cheap) laptop that I bought a couple of years ago as a backup and I'm having to use it now. It has an MSN browser and Microsoft won't let me download another browser. I tried to download Firefox and then Brave and it blocked them both. It also won't let me download duckduckgo, which I use on my real laptop and would like to use it.

It said that to use a different browser I have to switch out of S mode, or maybe it said switch to S mode, I don't recall, but whichever it is it warned me not to do that. (I thought I took a screenshot, but apparently I didn't) I'm thinking it just doesn't want me to do it. What difference does it make? I'd really like to load a browser I'm familiar with.

It's windows11.

Now, about this sound issue with my main computer. I did the windows trouble shooter and went thru all the steps recommended to restore it, but nothing worked. Then as a last resort it recommended I uninstall the driver and then go to hp support to reinstall it. So I uninstalled it. The problem is, when I did that, hp support doesn't have my computer listed as an option after I search the model. It's also not in the list of "no longer supported models". It gives me no other option, it's just a dead end.

It's also an HP, it came with windows 10, but I did the "upgrade" to Windows11. The audio driver is realtek, and I have the version #, but I don't know where to get it from so I can download it. Do I need to call the geek squad?

My new laptop came with 11. I didn’t have to shut anything off. Just used it. And loaded Firefox with no issues. Lucky??
Not all brands have s mode on when they install windows. Dell Inspire laptops do not have it on when shipped out. Lol

My new pc, would kill its internet regularly, only way to fix it was to restart. The wifi device disappeared from device manager. Anways, Costco customer service couldn’t fix it it said they would escalate to the manufacturer next time, Did I quick search, found an answer on Reddit, of all, there are 6 settinfpgs for the wifi, switched from dual band to 5 GHz, seems to hold

I got my cheap laptop all squared away since I took it out of S mode. Now I have Firefox and Brave, ublock origin, duckduckgo and my virus protection. All the stuff I couldn't download before. It's working good now. :yesway:

Thank you guys for that.

I still can't get the audio back on my main computer, I've done everything I can do (I had help from elsewhere) and nothing worked. I guess I need to put it in the shop. Since I got my other computer working right I can be without it for a while. I wonder what it's going to cost to get it fixed. Is the geek squad any good, or should I look elsewhere? I bought it from Best Buy.

What’d ya do? Threaten it with a hammer? Suggest repla big it with a new one?

HP support. I guess I was choosing the wrong computer or something when I was searching for the driver I need. It kept giving me the option of only one driver and it wouldn't load it. I tried again last night and I must have done something different because this time it gave me several driver options. I just clicked on one of them and this time a whole different screen came up than I've seen before. It walked me through the whole thing and voila!...sound!
