Cab mods underway...

I've decided to mod my empty 2266 Combo 212 into a vertical speaker cab.
Started with replacing the combo chassis access edge with a built-up face frame.

Going to move my 5100 out of the little stack of 1x12's.
These cabs were home builds made for a Class 5 - built to C110 specs, but with 12" speakers.

The converted 212 cab will have about 20% more total volume (internal space...) than the cabs designed for 10" speakers.

I'm reusing the combo baffle, 'cause it's already got the speaker holes and mounting bolts.
While debating in-line or offset speaker placement, I was staring at the offset layout and realized I could put in some Thiel style ports where I need to fill out the baffle anyway.

Some preliminary layouts with clearance for the relocated handles.
Sketching on the back panel with the heavy black lines approximating the front face frame and/or the back panel mounting cleats.

Going to try to adapt this to a removable rear load baffle that clears the back panel mounting cleats.
The port walls will stick out from the back of the baffle, but clear the cleats on the way in.

Progress pics:

Decided to leave the handles where they were, so they'll be on the top & bottom when the cab is vertical.
Glued and screwed the two baffle halves back together with spaces on either side.
The gaps are just about spec for a Thiel cab.

VM Cab (9).jpg

Cut the port dividers from more of the leftover 3/4" cherry that I made the JTM45 cabs from.

VM Cab (10).jpg

Glued & screwed in place on the baffle.

VM Cab (11).jpg

The port walls will go all the way to the back panel and double as a mounting cleat.
Filled in the rest of the back panel mounting cleats by relocating the existing pieces from the combo.
They are just screwed in and removable so the baffle can come back out.

Pic from the front.

Package 1 of 2 showed up from T&M just in time for the jack plate.

VM Cab (15).jpg

Speakers mounted and I put in the handles.

VM Cab (16).jpg

Popped the 5100 chassis in the head shell and took it for a test drive.

VM Cab (17).jpg

All good so I hooked up the ME-90.
The Thiel style ported cab definitely sounds bigger than the two 1x12's.

All the structural stuff is done, just need to make it look pretty.
T&M package #2 has the tolex & grill and won't be her till Monday.
I guess the finished product will be a next weekend project.

"Wrapped" up the cab mods today.
Didn't stop for progress pics, but here's some of it done.

VM Cab (19).jpg

Put the old feet back on what's now the side.
But if you're carrying it by the handles and set it down, they'll be on the bottom.

Another front shot.

Head shot - reused the VM handle on the head shell.

Thanks!

Nope, but I get a kind of satisfaction from imagining that WTF reaction from someone, someday, that's trying to figure out what I did... :yesway:
Yup! Others who might come across your stuff after you're gone, are going to be driven insane trying to find any info on all these special Marshall amps and speaker cabs. All the info posted on the internet and the forums is not guaranteed to last a lifetime, especially photos.
