Retired from amp building, sure. But still chasing tone.

Reworked and finished the last two amps that I had kept for myself. The first was the 65 Princeton Blackface build. This was the amp that was the straw that broke the

camels back. I had worried the very brass balls off of the monkey trying my best to figure out what was wrong with this build. tore it apart 3 times, rebuilt and had issues. Finally found the new

Hammond OT had a resistance of over 400 ohms between the primary leads (should have been around 70 to 75 ohms). During the last rebuild, I had decided to go with a Rob Robinette Version

similar to the 65 Princeton Reverb, but the reverb circuit is taken out but grids leaks left in. Gives a similar result to the Blackface AA964, but with the added gain of the reverb recovery stage. Then I

also decided to go with Cathode bias, delete the Vibrato. During checking the bias, using the Uncle Doug method, is where I found the primary winding so far off. Results are a most beautiful clean

am heard in along time Pristine cleans (replaced the OT , of course with a MPS version). Bought a used Omni reverb pedal, and DANG what a fine amp. A couple of pics below

I have a '64 tremolo version of this amp I've gutted and rebuilt from the ground up.

Second amp was the Fender 6G3 version of a Brownface Deluxe. I had built two similar versions of these before, so no re-inventing the wheel. Does not have the Vibrato, and is

cathode bias. I did change the values of the coupling caps in the preamp circuits. The Normal channel was changed to a .1uF, the bright channel changed to a .47uF. Deleted the

.003 cap across the plate on the norma channel too. Wow, what a round, warm full sounding amp. Not dark in any matter at all. A happy camper here.

Nice work. Princeton tone is supposed to be great, I never had a chance to play one.
I do hope someday to build a black face like Rob’s.

As usual, nice work with both amps, Terry …

Yeah, I’m currently going through the same issues with my build that I started about 4 months ago… Which leads to your 2nd post:

You might remember that 6 months ago I started a thread about the possibility of building a 6G3 clone on the “Lite” side: Thoughts About Converting My Tweedy 5E3 to a Brownface 6G3?. Even though my build is complete, there is a slightly annoying audio artifact, that with my obsession has lightened my wallet even further. I’ve been holding off starting a thread on this build until I feel I got something to brag about!

Meanwhile, I went over to The Amp Garage forum (Land of Many Amp Nerds) to seek help. I’m still stumped ! Sound clip and photos cannot be accessed unless you sign on as a member but the thread is at the following link:
