NAD, for real this time :)

I like KT77's in my Origin50H better than 6CA7's.
I also tried them in a DSL20H for a while, but liked the 6CA7's better with that amp.
Not a fan of EL34's either - not a tinnitus issue, I just don't like the tone.

The 77's have a stronger low end and still stay tight without getting flubby.
They might be good in the KK for some high gain with a little thump at lower volumes.
I hope so, we'll see.

Likewise. Anytime I play an amp I’m not crazy about, it usually has ELs. Although I kind of liked blending an EL84 with a 6v6 in my old Egnater Rebel 20.

Cool amp with the power tube blend and built in attenuator.

A little crazy under the hood.

I had one of those for a while when they first came out. I didn't know at the time that EL84s were messing with my ears, I just knew I liked the 6V6 side better so that's all I used.

Well it's been a minute now, I've really gotten used to the KT77s in here I love them. Every single dial or switching option on the amp is useful and sounds great in any positions and combinations. That wasn't the case with the EL34s or the 6CA7s, I could easily dial in a muffled/muddy/boomy sound or make the highs too bright or piercing if I wasn't careful, but that's not the case anymore. I'm sold on KT77s, they rock!

Congrats dude on new amp…. its your turn to play some Tallica now.

Let it rip and let it thrash

The amp will definitely do it, but it's been a lot of years since I tried to play any "Tallica".

I used to play around with this one a lot back in the day and still try once in a while, but I can't touch it now, too slow.

Since I mentioned it in another thread I figured I'd explain myself here. The KK is badass and has proved to be the sound I was looking for, but it's too much. I'm going to have Nik build me a Son of Yeti, only it's going to be a Son of Chupacabra. It's basically a 20 watt version of channel 2 on the KK, except it will have a Chupa preamp instead of the Yeti preamp it normally comes with. It runs 6V6 power tubes, which I love and I'm not getting along with the EL34s or any of the direct replacements (6CA7s & KT77s), I like the KT77s best, but I'm not loving them. I was originally going to have him build me a 6V6 version of the KK, but what I really like is the smaller footprint and weight of the 20 watter. The KK is a full size heavy beast of a head and I don't use channel 1 anyway so it's just a waste.

I'm getting it with a buffered effects loop and he's going to flip the whole thing upside down for me so the amp sits on the bottom of the head instead of hanging upside down because I just don't like that look.

That's pretty accommodating coming from an outfit that probably is very busy with their manufacturing side of things. I always thought it made more sense for amp heads to be built with the tubes pointing up.

Nik is great, I've been talking with him in emails since before I bought the used KK when I was thinking about having a new one built. I'm so glad I bought the used one 1st, it's helped me zero in on what I like and what I don't like/need so I can get it right the first time on a new build. It's going to cost me a little more for the flipped face plates and to add the buffered loop because some things need to be rearranged in the chassis to accommodate it, but it'll be worth it.
