Seems Townshend and Co. getting all Meaty-Beaty on Judas Priest has caused both joy and disappointment among the TTR ranks depending upon how pointy your guitar collection may be. But certainly, a decisive victory for The Who.

This means it's time to hit the starting gun for this next epic battle. I'm sure some of you have already been preparing your arguments.

And really, it doesn't really need to be said, but all of these battles are epic bands of some sort or another, so we can expect plenty of memories and emotions stirred.

KISS vs Deep Purple

I'm a little bit ambivalent on this one, but I know there exist rabid fans of both. I myself only own ONE KISS cassette recorded outside of this time period, and a pretty poorly pressed Best of Deep Purple LP. That's it. Never saw either in concert.

Both groups reached peak performance periods during the 70s, one earlier, the other later, but were also still going strong long after. But the riffs are pure power, etched in our heads forever. Any visit to a guitar store on a Saturday, you'll likely hear sections from either one of these outfits.

One of them borne out of origins of late 60's psychedelia, honing the edges sharper in the early 70's, turning it up and introducing listeners to the idea of a rock outfit featuring guitar, vocal, keys and drum virtuosity melded together, while melting faces at the same time.

The other, hatched more from the New York glam scene, with a heavier, more blues-based edge, song themes centered around machismo and misogyny.
This one managed to build a veritable ARMY of fans, earning notoriety via a press establishment and critics who loved to hate them. They also gained much attention via what purists viewed as gimmickry via outlandish makeup, costumes and certainly ground-breakingly epic live production.
Definitely ahead of their time, the marketing as powerful as the music, and arguably may have even invented the concept of the arena anthem.

For the time period of 1968-1980, what say you old fellers... which band would you rather be on the road with to see night after night?

KISS , man. As huge as Deep Purple was and influencial, I gotta be me.
I started playing guitar because of KISS. Purple was before my time and while I got into them later, I cannot ignore what an influence on me personally KISS was. So since I am not voting for overall influence on humanity (which is subjective too) but my own tastes, KISS is it. First Les Paul I got (-very late wasn't till 2017) was of course a cherry burst.
Thanks Ace.
Saw them numerous times.

This is a more respectable battle because it's two bands I really like.

First, you have Deep Purple who helped create heavy metal, whether they realized it or not. Ritchie Blackmore is one of the greatest guitarists on this list and brought the virtuoso guitarist to the fold, inspiring countless guitarists. The secret weapon however, was Jon Lord!

The MK2 line up is easily the best, solidifying their worth by reuniting for Perfect Strangers and giving DP a huge shot in the arm. Definitely a titan

But then there's KISS. Snobs have ALWAYS given them $hit as being all flash and no bang, but that is the stupidest argument I ever heard. Name one band bigger than them on this list during the 1970s, I'll wait. They had hit after hit and Alive! And Destroyer are milestones. The only band on this list that matched their theatrics is Iron Maiden and let's be honest: we're judging these bands as a whole, so who could entertain you better?

KISS ARMY til I die

I have never found anything likable about Kiss. Frehley‘s Comet was a good record, but as a band, and especially their personalities I found them quite repulsive.

Deep Purple on the other hand, I‘ve loved every incarnation. Records like Burn, In Rock, Machine Head, and Made In Japan have stood up to the test of time.

Under all the makeup, costumes and pyrotechnics that you see on stage, I've always "heard" Kiss as a basic rock 'n roll band.
There actual music is a lot tamer than their image.
I've seen them multiple times live - once w/o the costumes - but unfortunately, never with Ace.

The one time I actually played in front of an audience back in college, Rock & Roll All Night was one of the tunes we did.
Kiss aways put on a good show, and I've always liked their tunes.

But Deep Purple gets my vote in this match up.
Another legendary band in the pantheon of classic rock gods.
I'm not sure why this would need explaining.
Not even a close contest for me on this one.

Kiss was a fun band but it was all about money.
Deep Purple was serious musicianship; far more original and creative, cutting edge.
Both were very loud.

Richie Blackmore plays a clean guitar solo with no distortion in a heavy metal song.
Nobody else even attempts that.
He has no doubt, he does not fuzz it out.
