was doing laundry yesterday, she just finished up the last load everything was good. Well she was working upstairs, I went into the laundry room, there was some water on the floor and around the washer. Well knew it was going to happen at any time the old washer had enough. It doesn't owe me a thing. That Maytag lasted us 30 years. So off tomorrow to the appliance store and see what's they got!

We bought a new dryer last year, so once we buy the new washer, hope we are good for years to come..

Never fun when an appliance breaks. Fortunately, washer/dryers are generally not stupid expensive. And yeah…. At 30 years, it’s time had come.

Lately I've been working in the appliance department at Home Depot. Stay away from GE. LG and Bosch seem to get the least complaints. New appliances don't last 30 years. You'll be lucky to get 10. No commissions or spiffs at Home Depot so the sales staff tend to be more honest.

We bought a Maytag Bravos Washer and dryer about 7 years ago. Dryer has done well without any issues but the washer? Oh boy. First my son climbed on top of the see thru lid and broke it, so that costed me about $200. Then a few months ago, it got to a point where it would shake and bang out a death metal drum solo even if you had just a couple small items in it. Had to call the repair guy and that set me back about $400 for springs, balancers and an impeller shaft. So I basically have bought a new washer. One more problem and this thing is going out for scrap lol

I’ve replaced a bearing on the dryer. Managed to make it a way harder job than reality. Live and learn.

Our washer was having some issues actually getting the laundry clean. So my wife took it on herself to Google the problem. Watched some video. And took the washer apart to do a deep clean. She said a bit daunting at first…. But really was pretty easy to do.

From what I know the new ones don’t last and you can’t fix them easily.
The 30 year old washer was bullet proof. The new ones are destined to fail just like new cars. Cars are good 10 years, washers/dryer less.

Got 17 on my Civic. Still purrs like a kitten. At 199k uses no oil. And since I retired, I dropped from 250 miles a week to about 130 a month. Can get three months on a tank of gas. At this rate, most likely the cars gonna outlast me.

EDIT: Should have added…. You are absolutely correct on planned obsolescence built into products. My civic is a unicorn.

There are of course exceptions, Toyotas as well. All current vehicles = planned obsolescence by the manufacture.

Trust me. Has me surprised. Not so much the miles. Frankly in my mind almost anything produced after 2000, if you can’t get 200k+ out of a car, it’s your fault. But 17 years on salt roads in the winter and still have a solid body. That’s impressive.

Washer? LG front loader. The thing is amazing. Bought one to replace a decrepit old Whirlpool top loader some ~10 years ago. It was an ~$800 USD CR Smart Buy.

I have a Consumer Reports online subscription. LG is consistently at or near the top in both ratings and subscriber reliability surveys.

I have a likely 30+ year old Whirlpool dryer that slogs along. It is just me, so they do not see a lot of use.

Hey thanks for that info! I will be jotting down a few of these LG model, I have an LG fridge and stove and big screen TV fridge and stove 9 years old no problems . LG Tv 12 years still puuring along..
Every appliance we have will be 20 years old end of Oct. They were all new when we took possession Oct 31, 2004. The range and dishwasher has had fits….. but I was able to repair both. Have soldering gun will travel.

You have the right machine then. I never bought a new one yet but if I do, that might be the one.
Maytag used to be king but not now.
A lot of machines are the same with a different name.
