Looking to upgrade my cabs...

For those that don't know me yet, I play hard rock and metal mostly. I have a Marshall SC20H and a High gain "Plexi". I have 2 Marshall MX cabs (a 112 and a 212 vertical) and I have come to the conclusion that they are turds and no amount of polishing can make them shine, believe me I've tried. I just want to run this by you guys/gals and see if anyone has any opinions or advice.

My local GC has a used EVH 5150 212 cab listed for $379, marked down from $479.. (Comes with Celestion G12H 30W Anniversary speakers) Not exactly the look I had in mind, but at this point I don't care, I just want a cab that sounds good. If I don't like it they also have a Victoria 212, (but they want too much for it IMO..$900) and a couple of Victoria 112s I want to check out. I'd be all over the Victoria 112s but they don't match (tolex color) and they are narrower than both my head boxes by a couple of inches so I don't know about that.

Unless somebody tells me any of these cabs suck I've got both my MX cabs ready to take down tomorrow and trade in. They have a few more cabs I saw listed as well, an SC112 and I don't remember right off what else.

The EVH is birch ply. The Victorias are Redwood Pine (whatever that is), made in the UK and looks like they come with V30s. I'd never heard of them before.

Do I recall you having one of the H30 Anni speakers?

Yes. I'm not really worried about the speakers, I'm probably going to load it with Creambacks, one M65 and one H75 when it gets here. One of these days I want to try the Anni paired with a V30, but I don't have one ATM. I am hoping that if I do get the EVH that the speakers are well broken in, the one I have is not.

I posed this question over on the other forum as well.

Actually, scratch that. I forgot for a moment that I still have my Sourmash cab and that one will probably get the H75. I'll put the 2 M65s in a 212 if that's what I end up with. ...unless if I do get the EVH and the Annis blow my doors off, then I don't know where I'll go from there.

The speakers should be rated at least 2X the power of the amplifier.
High end expensive speakers are worth it. Good speakers cost a lot true.
If you buy Celestion speakers make sure they are made in England.
Building cabinets to factory specs is worth it; check the recommended internal volume and port size...
Thin wire (like 20 GA) sounds better for guitar amps*.

If I had my choice, I would go for 1X12 cabinets TL 806 design. This is simple easier to move and transport less weight.
I might build 4 of those pups, although I would only use all 4 if I was playing outdoor stages.

* thick wire might be better for bass amps and PA, but thin wire sounds better for guitar amps.

All my amps are 20watt or less. I have good speakers, I have 2 M65 Creambacks, an H75 Creamback on the way, a G12C Greenback, a 70th Anni H30 and a WGS Veteran 30. My end goal (as of right now) is to have a 212 and (2) 112 cabs, but I've learned that a good cab is just as important (if mot more) than good speakers, and good speakers and cab's are more important than just about everything else. Took me a long time and a lot of beating my head against the wall, not to mention all the money I've spent on pickups and tubes and such to figure that out.

So have any of you ever heard of or know anything about Victoria cabs? They get pretty good feedback from what I've seen online tonight.

is what's good about TL806, probably the best sounding cabinet and the plans are easy to get.

I have those speakers in my ‘71 Deluxe Reverb and a couple of DST cabinets. They are actually very good speakers. They are a slightly more aggressive version of the original 25 or 30 watt Green Backs.

For what they are, they are very good. Are they a ‘69 25M Green Back? No, nothing is.

Give them a chance if you buy the speaker. You might like them after a few days of playing with them.

Which speakers are you talking about, the 70th Anni H30s? The one I have I used for a while in my 212 cab before I took it out and put 2 Creamback 65s in it. I tried the H30 in my 112 MX cab and didn't like it, I've since learned that cab is crap, hence this thread, so I really can't say if I like it or not, but I'm gonna give then a try again in a better cab and find out.

The Anniversary speakers were the ones that I was referring to.

The Peavey 5150-6505-XXX cabs are my fav. Those speakers will do well, dont be surprised it they are very forward..but that is what is perfect for band or mix.
Sometimes Marshall & certain Celestions are a hard listen (takes a sec to get used to on their own)playing by yourself but open that volume a lil & wham, the guitar is right on the money in a mix.

Those speakers are excellent with 5150's

hey just read your post closer & thought about the amps. I keep 2 PV 2x12's always on standby for when new marshall's roll in,

The tweed is v30/t75
Black cab is greenback

Immediately a marshall will favor one or the other. So cool how that works everytime.

Greenbacks-old school & dependable palm mute compression..automatic what you think of marshall tone
v30/75 - Think tones after the greenback era going late 80's onward. Slightly tighter..the v30/t75 combo is very full across the tonal spectrum when mic's together. This was the cab pretty much took to the studio sessions when we did those 2 Marshall heavy albums few years ago.

The PV 2x12 cabs are very good cabs. if i can remember right the speakers you are looking at with that cab sorta fall in the middle, greenback like but slightly deeper & tighter.pv 2x12 s (2).jpg

I am enjoying my Peavey 112-6 with Celestion Greenback but I have only ever heard maybe one cab I liked immediately and that was an Orange 2 x 12 closed back. It’s been about 12 years since I tried it but I think it had vintage 30’s. For the most part I don’t care for vintage 30’s. However , I have had changing opinions on gear over the years.

I need to break down and do some speaker comparisons in the 112 cab.

Anyone in your area build custom cabs? That was the key to my small setup I've kept. I have two custom 212's, one that's a little larger than the other. And yeah, those MX and MA cabs were horrible.

Not that I know of, I doubt it, but I'll check around.

I was just getting ready to go when I saw your post. I called them and they said it just sold, somebody showed up for it when they opened. I didn't think they opened 'til 11.

Bummer. :(
I'm sorry brother.
Has anyone mentioned Harley Benton?
I've heard good things about the build quality and the loaded cabs are about the price of the speakers.

Available through Thomann-US.
Lots of stuff looks backordered, but they have an unloaded Thiele 112 for about $200 shipped.
