I just saw a local guy has a couple of guitars of interest but I am only trading at this point.
He has a 1996 Gem Studio Amethyst.
I never heard of them but it has cream p90’s.
Very interesting looking guitar but what I don’t know is if I want to trade my 1990 heavy azz ebony studio. And if he would want the trade?

I had a chance to get exactly that model guitar, used, a long time ago. For cheap, around 5 or 6 Benjamins, iirc. But... purple.

So I dithered.

And lost the chance.

Were it not the amethyst, I would think that the Gem was worth a bit more than your Studio, given that Gems were a relatively limited run. And have P-90s, which have come back into fashion (I myself am a huge fan). Versus other Studios, which are a dime a dozen.

BUT ... purple. So there's an argument that that particular Gem is in the least popular color/finish, and thus really not worth any more than a regular Studio.

Fwiw/ymmv.

Oh by the way...thanks for the GAS...NOT! :rolf2:

Seriously, I think I want to turn my P90 Melody Maker into a P90 Studio. I've been thinking about it for a while now, that's why I haven't routed the pickup cavity deeper yet so I can fit the SD Vintage P90 in it. The MM is a thin body and the routes aren't very deep. I really would rather find a Studio and put it in there. I'd look for a Special, but I really want an arch top.

Ebony , old heavy.
From what I've read, the Gems are heavy too.

Are the chrome rings original?
My HP edition Firebird has chrome rings and knobs.
(I ditched that stupid robo-tuner gizmo for some Steinbergers)

Just an opinion, but if you're looking to trade, some stock hardware and the pickguard may appeal to a wider audience.

No, it has brand new black plastic rings. I also have the black knobs it came with and pick guard. I have lost interest in the guitar . Mainly due to the harsh pickups.
