My immediate goal is to get a submission recorded for the Riffmaster challenge our resident Dr. Demented Brad…. Aka @TVvoodoo has dreamed up to torment the masses here in TTR. Many have risen to the occasion and submitted songs that are just flat out amazing. Mine won’t be quite so….. however…. As many have stated. It’s been forcing them out of comfort zones. That would be me. I’ve had the bass in my hands more in the last week-10 days than I have since I’ve owned it. Which is mid 90s. Even started to put a blister on one of my picking fingers.

So with any luck. I’ll have something on “tape” here in the next few day to submit. Deadline is next Monday.

Despite the fact that I too, am a Brad, I suspect I will not participate in the challenges. My band and writing and recording and practicing take up most of my time and energy. Have fun putting together your submission.

Be sure and check the thread out. There really is some pretty amazing submissions. There’s some serious talent and creativity in this forum.
 
My next goal will be to cut and paste parts. Just got the bass recorded into the piece. One pass. Pretty decent overall considering it’s the first time I’ve done a song on it start to finish. But there’s a couple spots that while I can be good with it…. It’s just quite right. Gotta learn how to cut that out and paste in a more correct couple bars or so. Learning curve.

RiffMasters is designed to push the pleasure buttons of the most OCD details recordist, the casual crank it out "musical sketch-artist" and everything in-between.

In "options" there is a function called "auto punch"
Where you set the section to be recorded over with the markers, hit record and start in a couple bars before the section you want to replace... it will automatically help you replace that section

Thanks Brad. My main goal is to get this thing recorded to a point I can submit…. Before next Monday. If time allows, I’ll try and clean it up.

So boys and girls. How's about a chuckle. Thought I'd share my "Recording" Studio. DAW of choice right now is Reaper. The box on the floor is a Boss GT1 I can interface with the laptop, which allows me to record guitar/bass. Currently I don't have a good way for vocals..... but I'm led to believe I might be able to use my phone as a mic and interface via USB. Haven't gotten that far yet. Yes.... I know... I need an audio interface and a real live mic. But just started down this path of recording and really want to be sure I want to continue. At that point, there would be some gear in my future. Until then.................. even I'm laughing at this, so feel free. Won't hurt my feelings.

Can’t you just record voice with your phone and Bluetooth it over to the laptop?

Maybe possibly. I did do a very brief google search to see if it was even possible. The quick answer seemed to be yes. Either Bluetooth or USB. But I need the guitar and bass in there first. And then I'll worry about my mediocre voice. ;):rolf:
 
Resurrecting an old thread here:
The first time I recorded myself at home was mid to late 1970s using a Radio Shack 2 track tape recorder. I have a few of those tapes that still sound pretty damn good considering their age.
Next up for me was the Tascam 424 MKIII when it hit the market. Four tracks to work with! WOOHOO AWESOME! Unfortunately, the build quality wasn't there.
Next up for me was the Yamaha AW16G standalone recorder. 21 years later....I'm still using it, exporting tracks to a disc and importing into Adobe Audition on my pc for tweaking and mp3 conversion. Zero lacentcy issues to contend with.
 
It’s really not about the gear anymore, if it ever really was. It’s about the song and the performance and the soul and swing of that performance, much more than how it was recorded.

Once in a while you get great songs and performances meticulously recorded, and then you have a true masterpiece. Steely Dan’s Gaucho, Lyle Lovett’s Joshua Judges Ruth, Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark, and a hundred other classic, iconic records.

80s-late 90s similar tape portion, except I had a Fostex 4-track before I got ahold of a Tascam 4-track.
I went AKAI when I went digital…DPS-12 in 1999, and on to the DPS-24 in 2003/4.
I moved on to a hybrid setup of the DPS-24 feeding an XP PC via a 32 channel ADAT interface, from the DPS-24s 24 channel ADAT and an 8 channel outboard ADAT preamp, around 2007/8.
From there I got into iOS recording, with iPhone and iPad around 2011…and back to computer recording(mainly)with Mac around 2018, with a Soundcraft mixer interface.
My DPS-24 still functions, but it is huge…takes up a ton of desk real estate…so, it’s in its original box…until I feel nostalgic at some point.
I still play around with iOS recording too. Currently using an A&H ZEDi8 for most of that stuff, but there are a couple of other I/O boxes kicking around here too…
 
I'm 67 today! I started in the 60's with a small portable 3 1/2" reel tape recorder, got a small plastic cassette tape recorder (both the real cheap kind)....and recording me recording guitar and singing on one, then playing it back and recording a second guitar and singing over it. Multi track baby, and I never even heard that term yet! Now, I'm old school and still do things very raw, but I do it with Reaper and plugins....don't do anything "correctly", always have done things my way.

There is no wrong way if it gets the job done. Thats the nice part of this “hobby” of ours. Or illness….. both descriptions would be accurate.
 
This is something I don’t need but that never stopped me before that being said it’s just me recording but if I had a pro studio this would be essential. It amazes me how they evolve technology.
