Howdy recordists!

Hi Jim/James/Seamus! I’m Don…Nice to read you. I’ve been interested in recording since I got my first 4-track(Fostex) in the late 80s. Got into digital at the end of the 90s. Got into doing digital demos for locals soon after, but backed off of that a while back to get back to working the day job in a more diligent manner. Got into remote recording a bit…in a very hobbyist way. Then back to a computer rig. Happy to meet you(via written word).

I hate running the DAW, I don't want to fiddle around with mics or anything, I don't like the little red light at all. I just want to jam, plug my guitar in, and go for it.

But, I've begun learning a little bit out of necessity.
Been out of the game for a couple years now though.
Recently wrote a new tune, I'm taking the vocal duties as well as guitars on this one, and (probably) bass also, ..I will be needing to fire up the recording gear again soon.

So this whole subforum is right in the nick of time!

I'll be another amateur who's here to watch and learn!

If you guys are interested in a “how to,” start a thread on what you want to know. I, @simoncroft and @Sam The Lion have all got extensive studio experience.

There is guidance and there is getting your hands dirty. Do the digging. Get dirty.

Ask the guys and gals with the callouses how they got them. It'll help...but there's nothing that can replace the time you spend using the machine.

Like I said I started doing sound-on-sound. Two mono tape machines. My Dad showed me how. Then years of sitting at consoles and hands on mixing. No automation. Just three sets of hands turning knobs and pushing faders.

I've mixed in the best studios in Hollywood. But I'd rather mix at home on my Mac and Logic. And my huge friggin' library of WAVES plugins. Which I only really use about ten of them.

I turned Jim on to the Aural Exciter plug, but for specific limited use. On drums, it humanizes the sound. Gets it a bit dirty. Like an on the verge edge of capsule overload compression. Put it on a buss and you'll hear a big difference, especially on drums.

Yep….that right there is a great looking place to park.

Is there a lava lamp?….I'm not seeing a lava lamp…I do see a LA-610….that’s cool…I feel better now.
I’ve gotta get off my a$$, and get some better room treatment going on…
I did just get a fancy(mine’s actually not that fancy…it does exist and performs the task) boom like that for my SM7b….nice!

I almost bought a lava lamp a couple of days ago!

So boys and girls. How's about a chuckle. Thought I'd share my "Recording" Studio. DAW of choice right now is Reaper. The box on the floor is a Boss GT1 I can interface with the laptop, which allows me to record guitar/bass. Currently I don't have a good way for vocals..... but I'm led to believe I might be able to use my phone as a mic and interface via USB. Haven't gotten that far yet. Yes.... I know... I need an audio interface and a real live mic. But just started down this path of recording and really want to be sure I want to continue. At that point, there would be some gear in my future. Until then.................. even I'm laughing at this, so feel free. Won't hurt my feelings.

You are doing the work, that's the important part. Interfaces are available for very little money, the pawn shops are full of them. If you have learned Reaper enough to make some tracks and mix them you are most of the way there. Mics are one of those topics that can get expensive fast, but don't have to be expensive. Have fun.
