I found this vid actually comparing the Harvard vs Deluxe. He talks a lot on this vid, the actual comparison doesn't happen until about 10 minutes in. Would you say this is an accurate comparison in tone? Every time he switches to the Harvard it's like he threw a blanket over it. The Deluxe is definitely more open sounding, bigger and brighter. But I'm not sure that's what I want, I really like the Harvard a lot, especially since I put it in the combo with an Alnico Blue. :hmmm:




Edit: I found this video that is a speaker comparison with a Harvard, at 1:30 he switches to an Alnico Blue.

Edit #2: I appreciate the offer, but I think the only thing I want to do is put it in a proper tweed cab. I'm looking at this and trying to figure out if it'll fit..

Steve, what chassis do you have ??

You will need a minimum of @ 18.5" between the finished inside edge of the rear cleats that the back panel bolts on to, for chassis length clearance and that is really tight on the selected model as it shows 20" wide so it's probably only 17" between the cleats. Modulus Amps list the length as @ 18.45" on your chassis. On tweed combos that can be a deciding factor. Also the rear upper panel is oval slotted for air holes to cool the tubes down, and the original tweed amp chassis width was 4" while the Modulus chassis is 6.5". You would need a vertical wider upper rear panel or the chassis guts will show.

I bought a combo cabinet from Mojotone and ran into similar problems, although the inside cleat distance cleared by about 3/8". I ended up buying tolex from them to match and cut a new wider rear upper panel and glued on the tolex so the panel covers correctly. I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow to show you what I'm pointing out. I need another hosting site other than Imgur as the last time I tried uploading pics the site had changed.

Also the 1955 and later 5E3 Tweed Deluxe sounds a lot different than the earlier 5D3 Tweed Deluxe. The later 5E3 version doesnt have NFB so no feedback to cancel out distortion. The earlier 5D3 also didn't have any NFB but it had a unique phase invertor that kept the clean up until you push into overdrive. The 5E3 uses cathodyne phase inversion while the 5D3 uses a version of a floating paraphase phase inversion.

I wasn't thinking about the cleats, I guess that cab won't work. Maybe I need to just let it be. I just wish the cab I have had a smaller foot print and looked like a Fender Tweed. It's the cab the Majestic came in, I swapped the Majestic into the head box.

When is your estimated move date? I'm going down to see my Mom for Mothers day in may. It would be cool if I could stop on the way and meet you in person. I've got something for you.
 
I guess I technically only have one amp right now. I have a kemper and a handful of amps I built, but I only have ONE amp that I'm confident will not burst in to flames at any given point.

It took me many years to track one down, the Reason Reato. It fits nicely under my little work desk

I'm a total Obeid Khan fan boy. I've had a few Reason Amps, one of his Khan Paks and one of the new Magnatones he designed, but this Reato is the only one I've kept. For me it's the perfect portable, powerful clean combo amp. The reverb is nice but the tube vibrato is just killer. I don't use it alot, but it gives a cool lo-fi swampy kind of sound.

Here is a quick clip of when I first got it

I'm surprised how much I like that guitar. I wanted to give a headless guitar a shot to see what all the fuss is about and it really is a great design. It's ergonomic as all get out, perfect guitar for sitting down while playing.
