The most I've spent was on a Marshall JTM-1H. After $100 discount I paid exactly $649.99. This is a one watt amp. It does have a way cool tone. Only 947 of the "H" version was made and I have one. I got my 1976 Fender Super Reverb for $400. Today it is getting way too expensive for nice gear.

I actually want one of those JTM's! I have $600 in my JCM 800 and paid $550 for a DSL50. I paid $175 for my Ibanez head and really like that thing. If money were no object I probably would have a complete separate music/memorabilia room built and it would be loaded with any amp I could imagine covering 2 walls and the other 2 lined with guitars!

It took me over ten years to find the Epi Electar 10. They have a 15 watt one also with EL84s, it might be different than the EE 15R. I did see one of the 15 watt ones. I never plugged it in. I had my eye out for the 10 which I landed from ebay a few years back.

"Few", is almost an understatement. Many others, but my favorite for the Marshalls is Metropoulos Amps. For Fender, especially Blackface style, for me it would be Allen Amps. Once again, many others, too.

I am assuming that tbis means that even a 2K fender or marshall

is not poiht-to-point. Is that correct?

I voted for up to 3K. Usually, I hunt for deals, but I will spend some money on the right amp. The most I've ever spent ($3200.00) was on my DST-30, which is a very nice hand built early AC-30 clone. It has proven to be worth every penny I paid for it. I even just found a second Goodmans Audiom 60 speaker for it, so it will have some circa 1962 speakers in it soon.
I also bought a brand new JTM45 reissue in 1988. I still have it, and it's proven to be a great amp over the years.
Some others include a 1973 Marshall 1987 50 watt, 1978 Marshall JMP 50, 1979 Marshall JMP 100, 1986 Hiwatt 100R, 1964 Fender Bandmaster, 1970 Fender Deluxe Reverb, 1965 Ampeg Gemini II, and others. The way I look at it is, it's money in the bank. I made out well on pretty much every one, and would have to let them go real cheap to lose money.
Granted, I have also bought cheap amps. I have a $40 Vox Pathfinder 15R and a $100 '79 Marshall solid state Super Lead 100 combo.
I just really prefer valve amps, and always have my eyes open to anything that may come along.
 
I voted the cheapest check box, up to $450. I think it was. Big surprise huh?
I cant justify and dont have big money to spend, on anything. The house and bills get paid first.
My skill level doesnt justify it either.
The folklore of the legendary amps intrigues me but I dont have any Holy Grails that I pine for.
I drool a bit sometimes, like when 67plexi posts ^^^^^^, but more so in reverence for the legacy and role in music history.

The Silkyn Super 50, with the impossible to find off the shelf replacement PT totals out at $416.
My other amps: 10w peavey practice amp $40 used, my son uses it daily- now with my G400.

the clone builds: 5F1/5F2a Champ with Princeton tone pot, 5E3 Deluxe, and 18w TMB, each come in at well under $300. each.
the fit and finish is not store bought looks wise, but the tones deliver.

I can cover a lot of tone ground with these, except the hi gain stuff.
I'm happy with what I have and expect to be for a while.

I wont turn away from another Ubuy find: with major parts on the cheap I'll build whatever I can, especially since I fab chassis and cabs that are good enough.
 
I figure somewhere between $1500 - $2500 is the sweet spot. There doesn't seem to be a ton of difference tone-wise to my ears when spending much more than that, just some sort of cachet that comes with limited availability/"boutique-iness"/PTP marketing hyperbole/snake oil. I've played through some great amps that topped $3k, $4k +, but never played through a single one that could best a Mark 5. I know that the the Mark may not be everyone's personal tone reference, but I do think you can fill in the blank for your favorite amp that's around 2 grand and the same would apply.
 
How much I'd pay really depends on my budget at the time. But, money supply barring, I'd have no issues paying a couple grand for the right amp. But, I'm always on the look out for those dirt cheap too cool amp buys that are just plain fun to find and own and quite often are nice sounding/playing too.

Those sort of prices are the reason I built this.
