On a budget, I'd buy used tube Marshall between 450-900 USD. I really want one of those anniversary 1 watt JCM 800 heads.

I've already bought two modeling amps at nearly $2000 each. I kept the Kemper and sold the Helix...although I'd gladly buy another Helix if funds were loose.
I'm very interested in buying a Mesa Boogie Mark V and I think that will set me back at least a few thousand???

Other than your pickups all your sound comes from your amp so it's a splurge area for me...

YEah.....no reason ---for ME anyway--- to spend THOUSANDS on amps------ though I have played through AC30's and WALLS of PEaveys and stuff.......my hearing issues dont allow me to turn the ones I have above Vol level 4 ever....usually I am around a 2.5. So why realistically would I need 1000 WATTS of Bugera BASS power Chris???? Why ask???? ---- because I WANT IT!!! ;)

@eSGEe : I really dig that the TKO 65 has a built in on compressor/limiter. It has many of the unique features of the Centurion Mark III bass head we used in the 70s. Let's get a new gnarly Peavey badge for that tone machine!

I just started a thread inquiring on opinions/experiences with the Helix over in the pedals forum. Would love to see what your experience was. I also owned a Mark V combo for a while. It was a very nice amp but I didn't really like it. Took a lot of time spent dialing in sounds and couldn't really get a good saturated dirt sound without throwing an overdrive in front. I guess I am partial to the rectifiers.

The Helix was just fantastic! You can get so many great sounds from it...almost any amp you can think of is emulated almost perfectly. The Kemper does nearly the same thing, but I chose to keep it because it was a table model and the Helix was a floor unit. Some prefer the floor unit because it also has a wah type pedal built in. The Helix is also built like a tank. I will own another one at some point, but for now the Kemper will do.

Another great thing about the Helix are the massive amount of patches out there. Hundreds can be had for free and others must be purchased. Of course you can build your ow, which is a lot of fun if you have time and patience to learn...

I downsized from a SLP Marshall into (2) DSL40C's. For one, the SLP became valuable enough to make a good profit and I didn't need a stack any longer. I still have (and use) my 1997 Marshall Vs265 (2X12) Valve state as a practice amp, and the DSL40C's are good amps, but their biggest attribute is they are light and portable.

Ok,

Let me respond in a different way....I'm super practical. If I had $1,000,000USD I would still buy a Ford Mustang. If I had limitless funds to spend on an amp, it would be a re-issue JCM 800 Full Stack. There isn't anything better, at any price, from my experience in live performance settings...although I would have to buy a new Ford Flex just to transport it.... :-)

But these kind of Ferengi acquisitions can only be found by someone with true Ferengi blood.
 
The most I've spent was on a Marshall JTM-1H. After $100 discount I paid exactly $649.99. This is a one watt amp. It does have a way cool tone. Only 947 of the "H" version was made and I have one. I got my 1976 Fender Super Reverb for $400. Today it is getting way too expensive for nice gear.

I'd spend $1500 if I found one I wanted...I've spent more on modelling amps that give me plenty of great tube sound...
