From Reaper to Studio One ...

I've used Reaper since I can't even remember as my DAW. I decided to peek around yesterday at other options for a possible nicer and more usable interface. I came across Presonus Studio One 6 and it looked pretty hot so I downloaded an evaluation copy then picked it up for $99.

The interface is sharp as a razor and is laid out beautifully for ascetics and workflow. Reaper is odd and has always been in a lot of ways while Presonus is a design masterpiece DAW. For one, Presonus gets to the point in the menus with one or two words while reaper gets into near sentences for a menu option that completely lose you at times. Plus they have real odd sort of options that would never even be used. Studio One is right to the point without all this extraneous crap. You can even generate images for your plugins. What better way could they use to find a friend in me?? Lol.

Without further adieu I present to you my new DAW ....Presonus Studio One 6:

I have Artist version. There is an upgrade and even a Professional version after mine. Be warned though, the upper versions offer things like real-time social clubs and other weird social media kinda stuff that to me is a complete waste. Artist is a strait out DAW without this ridicules sort of stuff.

Some may find this boring, but I did at least provide you a new thread to read. ;)

RE: “Reaper is odd”… Yep. Completely customizable is not for everyone. I have my screen layouts that I like for different tasks.
RE: …”real odd sort of options that would never even be used”…perhaps “by me” would be a better way of phrasing…

Thanks, bro.

I wasn't talking about it being completely customizable. I've spent many years with me and my licensed Reaper. It's strange. For example: If you select a portion of a track then hit your "Delete" key it will delete the whole track. This is not right since it should just delete what it selected. You also cannot select a portion of a track and delete it ...the best you can do it "Cut" it out. Also, if you select a portion of a track then click copy it will copy the whole track. It requires you to click "Copy selected portion of track". Well ...DUH?? It's been a decent budget interface I have to admit even while being weird though. I just got a little tired of it.

Hope I don't sound dicky. ;)

We all have our own ways of thinking…I’m still cool with the occasional right click, or macros. It’s all good.

Sometimes change breeds creativity or hinder it.
Recorded everyday for quite a few years there. Reaper is all i know or wanna know i guess. Currently, My 2 preamps are set, 2 mic's on stands in front of guitar cab & singing mic on stand. Should the urge to record hit me ever again..can walk in & flip a few buttons & its done from years of finding those settings,

My observation in recording & live usage,,set & forget.. Same seems to be true in my garage..minimal tools & massive work accomplished. Probably just not into the gear side, def could care less what my guitar looks like, more so into the work put in = product maybe.

I hear ya! Reaper was all I knew and I felt the same way. I was certainly my goto. I didn't change to bash Reaper (too bad); instead I really just liked Studio One. I like newer interfaces that are commercial because they get a lot of thought a lot of times because they want the bucks. Over and beyond things that are aesthetic usually.

Yea, I can buzz through Reaper like nothing obviously because of the years into it. I know what you mean there for sure. As Don said: "Different strokes different folks".

Looks good, how does that work with all of your licensed software. Does it just load or do you have to log in to all the licenses ?

I use Mixcraft and have for a couple of years. I started with version 8, now 9.
In fact they are doing a upgrade to 10 right now. I still learn new things with it.
There are great tutorials.

I know Reaper is popular , I just never really bonded with it. I used Audacity before that.

Change can even move you ! Every NGD or amp always brought an instant tune. Its the inspiration we need sometimes. Get out of the rut into a new lane. My prob is i have everything color coded & set.

Thanks, bro. It was seamless with the plugs. I noticed some of the double decker plugs (stereo) would only show up with the top portion of the rack, in a mono mode. I was so confused I tried to look it up and found nothing. It was part of what made me buy it since I thought it was a weird limitation. Turns out when the track is mono the plug displays in a mono mode and when it's stereo it comes up in a full interface mode. So, that was that - the only problem I really had with it. I really like the software and the flow of the design. The interface is luscious as well. (I didn't say that).

I've been with Reaper since I stopped using Cool Edit. Been quite some time. Lol. Good for you to know a few!

You sir.
I'm a Reaper user, just wondering how my accumulated knowledge might translate.

Reaper is powerful and if you know it you will have no issue with other DAWs. You basically look to do what you already know and can pretty easily formulate it with the new interface. Especially when it's laid out very concise with a well thought out design.

The only thing I forgot was automation. I remember the concept and have done it a while ago but I don't remember how to set it up and how to set it up for the different print methods. Studio One has that also so it will be a refresh all over again anyway.

Oh the high of inspiration. Lol. That goes for a lot of stuff for sure. Get something new and you are ALL about it! Yea, if you are all color coded up just ride it. I'm not trying to inspire change really; it's more just a sharing of stuff that WE find COOL!!

:dood:

I looked into Studio One a few years ago before I dove straight into Reaper. Not available on Mac at the time, not sure if it still isn't. I don't record enough to really bother learning another DAW. After running through Ableton for a number of years, struggling with that weird interface, and falling back onto Garageband, which feels more like Play-Skool level of DAW. I wasn't going to buy into the expensive version from Apple. So Reaper fit the bill. The one thing that really irritates me, is that every time I open up Reaper, I have the update pop up. Seems like they have a new update every few days.

Hahahaha! I blow them off on the reg…only when I have a moment, do I bother to fix something that ain’t broke…
But otherwise, same boat…on Mac here too…the Studio One version that I tried was early Mac (I guess)…I’m in agreement with the playschool GB…not, at all, my thing…not going for the Logic Pro thing here either…
