I use one of these.

Yes. That does a lot of other things too - like really cleaning up the mains. I've never found that necessary for amplifiers.
Don, are the 250VAC specs on the gas discharge tubes OK for the USA folk on a 120V A/C system?

Yes. The tubes actually flash over at about 2500 volts. As soon as they flash, the voltage drops to about 150V until the surge has gone. The Bournes tube you found is fine.

Thanks!

Yet anotheer question. Does the tube survive the flash?

Yes it does. Nothing breaks here. Power supplies I have designed have been required to survive 500 18-Megawatt flashes and still meet specification.

Nice!! Since I have purchased enough components to make 25 of these, it looks like I am set for a while! Thanks again!

I would be willing to purchase a set from you to help you offset your cost. I need another project.

I actually bought more parts. I will be installing them at home and at work. I purchased enough components for 50 for a total cost of about $ 75. well worth it IMHO.

Have you set one up yet?
Another detailed build thread?
How would one test the circuit to make sure it does what it's suppose to?

No build thread for this one. Don has covered it all. As for knowing it works, I trust in Don. He is like the priest in my religion of science (Don will like this analogy, right?). In any event, I have been trusting those low tech surge protectors, and this will be a ssupplement to those.

I would test it if I could. I am on a phone right now, but guessing that the devices Don posted are not cheap!!

Don't worry, I've tested these to death (literally), and they can stand anything one of those machines can conjure up.

Priest of the religion of science. You'll have to excuse me while I go and put my head in a bucket of cold water. :)

My friend Claire runs the Benjamin Franklin museum here in London. She knows all about kites and keys.

So I have been told to go fly a kite...in bad weather...and then report back...if possible. It appears that I am not as indispensable as I may have hoped.
